Stack the fire

Hello,

In the book "Parrot and Olivier in America" by Peter Carey, I came across the expression "stack the fire":

Finding myself suffering considerable emotions I turned to stack the fire which had, as always at Old Farm, been neglected by the servants. The great logs being almost exhausted and the kindling in poor supply, I had excuse to make a considerable task of it...

It would be clear to me, if there were the expression "stack the wood". But in this case I don't know whether Olivier "stacked the wood" or whether he put some more wood onto the fire.

Could you, please, help me with it?

Thank you very much.
I have two versions of the text and in both there is the verb "stack".
I think it means to stack—that is, to arrange—the wood in the fireplace in preparation for lighting a fire. I infer this from the reference to kindling, which is placed in position first in what we might call laying a fire.
This does make sense, thank you very much.
