Hi every one,

I have read the following statement in Elements of Cinema by Robert Bird. What does exactly "subversive"or "subversion" mean here? I know it means to destroy or to overthrow but I want its correct meaning here.

<<deletion>>By unsettling any stable shore in past or future, Tarkovsky achieves an effect on our notions of desire and fulfillment that can only be described as . The kind of achieved by Tarkovsky can be more precisely defined by examining a parallel between Tarkovsky's Nostalghia and Roman Polanski's 1958 short Two Men and a Wardrobe. Two men emerge from the sea, carrying ashore a large wardrobe with a mirror. As they walk through town they encounter various forms of intolerance and hostility, so they return into the sea. <<deletion>>

Hello WG,

I think a key point to remember here is that he's talking about the subversion of 'our notions of desire and fulfillment'. He's concerned with Tarky's manner of presenting experience in ways which run counter (subvert, undermine) to our normal conceptions of how we run our lives, what gives us pleasure, what we expect people to do, etc.
