suspend operation

Thank you, Rover.

Is "The restaurant suspended service" OK, too?
Thank you, Nunty.

The restaurant suspended operation Friday night and police launched an investigation.
Does this sentence sound awkward if operation is changed into "operations"?
I think "suspend operations" is a collocation that is used (for non-surgical contexts) but I associate it more with companies/organizations that have many different kinds of things going on - multinational conglomerate corporations might, for example, "suspend operations" (meaning all operations, like mining, drilling, refining, processing, exploration etc.) in a small country where a coup had just happened. For a restaurant, however, "operations" sounds a bit grandiose. The owners are said to "operate a business" and when they close, the cease/suspend operation.
