Take stock

Hello. I am writing a book and I wondered if the following verb, take stock, is well used in the following sentence: "We both knew that the scarce wealth my mother could leave us at her death was probably hardly enough to cover some possible little debts she may have left, once her little business was taken stock of and closed".
Thanks in advance for your kind cooperation.
It would probably work better if the verb tense were changed to past perfect. The phrase could probably do with a bit of wordsmithing as well:

"We both knew that the scarce amount of wealth my mother could leave us at her death was probably going to be hardly enough to cover even the little debts she may have left, once her little business had been taken stock of and closed out."

Even wordsmithed a little, that sentence is still doing a lot of work.
