Das Unbehagen teilen damals auch die Kommentatoren der wahrlich nicht linken Presse. (Die Tageszeitung (1997))

This must mean: "The uneasy feeling was shared at that time by the commentators of the really not dirty press too."

But shouldn't it have been "teilten" instead of "teilen"?
Of course teilten would be correct but in this case, the present tense is used to refer to a past event ('historical present'), probably for stylistic reasons. In German, this occurs quite frequently:

(Off-topic but perhaps worth mentioning: linke Presse = 'left-wing press')
Is this similar to how French uses the present quite often to talk about the past (except in newspapers)?

In this sentence (Das Unbehagen teilen damals auch die Kommentatoren der wahrlich nicht linken Presse.) present would not be used in French.
My bad. French sometimes uses the present to talk about the past.
