Hello, could anyone give me the meaning for word in below phrase which is related to the grammer.

"There is a natural tendency to join words together in easiest,simplest and smoothest way."

So,Please help me to get out of this confusion.Actually I now the meaning as 'likelihood,inclination',though I don't understand the phrase clearly.
I put all my effort but I failed to understand.
