Can anybody help me with this translation....if somebody would give a testimonial about a product..given freely so to say...how would you say this is spanishß

Así que en tu caso debe ser "recomendación".

Actually, the Spanish term that's being used in advertising to translate the English term testimonial is, believe it or not, "testimonial", yeah, the same word. "Testimonio" is not used in a marketing context because it has a religious connotation.
I forgot to add that "testimonial" in Spanish is the commercial "testimonio" a customer gives about a product or service. Usually, this testimonial is expressed in praising terms and recorded to be shown on TV and/or the company's videos. It's exactly the same commercial use and the same word as in English.

In my country, testimonio is not just necessarily linked to religious connotations. Testimonio is the word that should be used, marketing and advertising people LOVE to use things such as:

testimonial-------- instead of testimonio
controversial----- instead of controvertido
serial---------- instead of serie

Testimionio is the word, testimonial sounds "nicer" to these people, but it is wrong.

in Spain "testimonial, controversial, etc.. are always translated, if not it´s considered a wrong translation, as it has a different meaning:

In fact, testimonial means true:
testimonial.
(Del lat. testimoniālis).
1. adj. Que hace fe y verdadero testimonio.
2. f. pl. Instrumento auténtico que asegura y hace fe de lo contenido en él.
3. f. Testimonio que dan los obispos de la buena vida, costumbres y libertad de un súbdito que pasa a otra diócesis.


I feel the best translation, always depending on the context, could be "recomendaciones" when is a client`s opinion about a product or service, or "testimonios" when is about a witness testifying, evicences, a History writer or an official document -the notar for instance, gives "testimonio" with his/her signature of the authentication of a document-. Also out of Juridic sector, is also used when people write about something that they want to maintain or be known by others "dejar testimonio escrito".

In advertising and commercials world in Spain we always use "testimonial" -without translation; stress in the last syllable- to refer to a person's speech about a product. (i.e. in a commercial about a detergent, when users say how good is that detergent for them).
