In this following context, should I take the phrase "this tiny man" to be a ''homunculus''?
How should I understand the meaning of the underlined phrase, in a simple way?

I don't think it's referring to the idea of the "homunculus," which was more of a medical-type theory hundreds of years ago. It reads to me like "this tiny man" is referring back to the "ego-entity," that sense of ourselves as a unique, permanent being. The tricky part here is that this source is quoting another source, of which we only have a snippet. "Tiny man" might be referring back to something Volgyesi said before the quoted text begins.

I think it just means any man/person, who is "tiny" (and unimportant) compared with the whole universe.
