I have been told that editer is not a good choice for this sentence:

il faut avouer que Molière avait précisé «tout ce que j’ai jugé capable de fournir...un prétexte aux célébres originaux du portrait que je voulais faire.»

I'm trying to get across the idea that Moliere had edited everything he thought unsuitable before publishing.

I'm not sure I like preciser however...any suggestions?
