tortured relationship

What does it mean that he had "tortured relationship with his aging father"? Does it mean "he and his father did not have a good relationship" or "he was so sad that his father was getting older and older" or "his fathers terrifying stories about death camps made him sad"?

Context:
The two volumes (comic books Maus I and 11 by Art Spiegelman) tie together two powerful stories: Vladek’s harrowing tale of survival against all odds, delineating the paradox of daily life in the death camps, and the author’s account of his tortured relationship with his ageing father. The drawing style is direct and effective, relying on black and white contrasts and the dynamism of Spiegelman’s line to support the narrative.
It suggests to me that for some reason which isn't clear from just that extract, he and his father didn't have a good relationship.
