Hmm, it isn't the light that is translucent but the amniotic sac. I would say that the foetus was in the amniotic fluid, bathed in a red light coming through the translucent amniotic sac.

I think light can be translucent or opaque, and I may be wrong.

I agree with Nat - it is the medium that is opaque, transparent or translucent. And these adjectives describe how the light passes through the medium (or doesn't).
