Visualize

Greetings,

Actually this question was raised in another thread where I was trying to ask people to describe how they see each of two different sentences in question.

I wonder whether we can use 'visualize' as an intransitive verb in this example:

How do you visualize when you hear each? (Can this clause (When you hear each) be pressed into service as the object of the sentence?)

Vs

What do you visualize when you hear each? (It's used as a transitive verb here but seems to ask for a particular answer and not a detailed description. So it fails to convey the intended meaning.)

Thanks
Yikes. I might say (piecing things together, and probably getting it wrong): What do you visualize upon hearing both sentences?
Thanks a lot, dear perpend.

So you mark 'when you hear each' as wrong?

And regarding 'what' and 'how', As I mentioned, I'm asking people to precisely outline what they see upon hearing them. Wouldn't you think 'how' fits better in that case?

Thanks

I would add "of them".

I don't see "when you hear each of them" as the object of the sentence. I hear "How do you visualise...?" as intransitive, and "when you hear each of them" as an adverbial clause that modifies the verb.

I'm not sure whether this intransitive usage of the verb is correct. It seems a bit informal to me. "What do you visualise?" is fine, and I can't really see the distinction you are trying to make here.
I visualize in colour but he visalizes in black and white. These would be examples of intransitive usage and answers to the question "how do you visualize?"
