Hi everyone!
I have to translate a short story for my translation class. Here is the sentence I find a bit hard to translate:
"He lived alone in a voiceless, sanitized shrine-his very one space in the sky". I suggest "Il vivait seul dans ce sanctuaire silencieux et aceptisé: son bout de ciel à lui". My question is the following: do you usually use the adjective "voiceless" with inanimate things or does this association sound as an unusual collocation, because if it does, I should probably translate it by "ce sanctuaire muet et aceptisé".

voiceless is usually a linguistic term to describe a consonant that has no voice (fr., insonore), like t, p or f

Here it probably is used to stress the fact that he is alone, no one to talk with, so there is no voice in the place.

silencieux me semble un terme plutôt positif, alors que voiceless dans ce contexte décrit ce qui est manquant -- sans voix, dépourvu de voix ?

c'est pareil en anglais, Jeanbar. Ce qui donne un effet plutôt étrange à la description du lieu...
Oui, wildan1, l'emploi du mot 'voiceless' m'avait frappé aussi.
En français on pourrait rendre cette impression de solitude en disant "un sanctuaire aseptisé, sans âme qui vive"
I think that the use of voiceless is an example of hypallage, where a qualifier is trasnferred from one noun to the other. I.e. although used to describe the 'shrine', it is actually telling us about the 'he'.
Employer muet pour un objet inanimé est en effet inhabituel (si l'on exclu ceux justement destinés à produire du son !), mais je le garderais bel et bien pour traduire voiceless.
Je ne crois pas que le sanctuaire en question soit un endroit silencieux, mais plutôt un lieu qui ne "raconte" rien, qui ne semble pas avoir d'histoire, qui n'éveille pas les sens.
Muet réussit à traduire cette dimension selon moi, et complète bien aseptisé.
Ok, so the use of "voiceless" to describe a room is definitly unusual. I guess the word "silencieux" is a bit too weak then...I think I going to stick to "sans âme qui vive";

in this extract, the narrator is actually describing the main character's apartment. "Muet" was one of the aternatives I had thought of, but I just wanted to make sure that "voiceless shrine" was as usual in english as "sanctuaire muet" in french.
"Muet" seems to be the perfect match!
