Hello out there,
It has been so long since this community has been active. I'll admit to having almost forgotten about it. Something inspired me to seek out The Distance To Here on my iPod on the way to work yesterday. Words cannot describe how refreshing rediscovering this album felt. Where is the Live that recorded that masterpiece? Some of you may argue that they haven't gone anywhere. I know it is an issue that runs deep through the fans and friends of Live. I can't say that I am as passionate about this band as I once was. I don't want to harp on about it.. but I just wish that the albums succeeding TDTH built on the magic found within those breathtaking songs. Anyway, point of the post - does anyone want me to keep this comm active? Or is deletion only one logical step away? It's in your hands..

I caught the Live show in Reading this past Thursday night at the Sovereign Performing Arts Center...it was an impressive show---funny the previous post here has pics that looked much like what I saw at the end of the performance. The guys were clearly hot and exhausted after about 2 hours of playing.I've never been disappointed at one of their shows- except maybe one many years ago when Live did a tour with Counting Crows- I hated that they split the show in half---I wanted to hear more of Live.

Anyway- they played very little of their newest cd..maybe two songs. I think they're very much aware that most of their fans want to hear their older tunes (frustrating as that may be).

The set list included White Discussion, Shit Town (after many requests), Lakini's Juice, Heaven, Dance With You, Dolphins Cry, Lightning Crashes, I Alone...and several other great songs including an amazing cover of Johnny Cash's "Walk the Line." Chad Taylor did an incredible guitar solo for this one...

I always come away from their shows in awe. I don't think any other band that I've ever listened to puts me on my feet like they do.
Here are some pics from a fantastic performance in Germany [30 Jul 2006|02:25pm]

I just picked up Songs from Black Mountain today.

On the cover, it said the first 2 tracks were the featured ones. I felt they were 2 of the least impressive songs on the CD.

I feel that they saved the best for last, each song got steadily more impressive. But only one song on the CD really moved me, the last one.

I just felt that the first 11 tracks did not sound like LIVE, it just did not carry that energy and feeling that I feel in the songs from the first 5 CDs.
Save for the final song. If all the songs on the CD sounded like that, it would have been amazing.

What I enjoyed about LIVES lyrics was the way they taught of hope, or to look at the world a better way, or reflect on the negative side of it.
I felt this CD had more of a "yay, everyone is happy, I love the universe" sort of feel to it.

That is my critique of the CD,

Any thoughts???

Just listening to The River on the radio inspired me to post how unenthusiastic about the new record I am. I haven't got it. Or the single. Or am planning on buying either. I have absolutely no interest. Maybe if The River didn't sound like a rehash of past material perhaps I would be. Please someone - restore my faith and convince me it's worth a listen. Or do I retreat back to the Live of The First Four Albums?

From Chad Taylors MYSPACE BLOG. I hope we get some good stuff that hasn't been played in a while!!!! "Unsheathed" anyone anyone!!?

After two very long days of rehearsing we have worked up some really, really fun material for the May/US dates. I'm betting many of you will be thrilled with the selections. I would tell you what we worked on but that would spoil the surprise of those lucky few who got tickets....sorry if you don't have one. Can you believe it's been five years since we launched a word tour. I don't count anything shorter than a 6 month run, so that means we haven't done the US like this since the Live/Counting Crows run after Distance. Fuck! With more than 35 songs in the current batch were more than ready for some extra long shows for the fans who show us the most love. SFBM, AWAKE, BOP, V, TDTH, SS, TC and MJ all represented! See you soon or it could be another five years..."

So, what does everyone that has heard the album think. I would say on a start rating from Zero to **** it gets ** 1/2. It saddens me to say it, but I am not impressed. I know everyone rags on "Birds of Pray" (an album that I thoroughly enjoyed) but this is the one that gets the title of WOrst Live Album. It has 3 really amazing tracks ( "Show", "Sofia" and "Night of Nights") that are up there with the bands best, but it has many cringeworthy songs ( "You Are Not Alone", "All I Need", "Love SHines") as well. The rest are a mixed bag, "Mystery" would be really good with the strings removed. "Get Ready" is tolerable, a bit too countryish, but far from bad. "Wings" is a tad cheesy, very WB. "Home" is ruined by awful lyrics, but the music itself I like. ANd "Where Do We Go From Here?" made no impression at all, I can't remember what it sounds like.

So would I recommend it? To the fans, well, you will get it regardless, but to friends that are not familiar with them, no, i really wouldn't. Which makes me really sad to say. I would recommend "Birds of Pray", as well as "V". But this album, not so much.

1) The River
2) Mystery
3) Get Ready
4) Show
5) Wings
6) Sofia
7) Love Shines
8) Where Do We Go From Here?
9) Home
10) All I Need
11) You Are Not Alone
12) Night Of Nights

Release Date: June 13th, 2006 (US)

I was driving home tonight listening to V in my car, and realized that I think in my car is my favorite place to listen to Live. Doesn't matter which album, I just think it is great driving music.

Do you agree? and if not, where do you like to listen to Live most?

And speaking of "V" I have a silly question. I have never heard anyone ever refer to the CD so I honestly do not know how it is said. Is it V like the letter, or 5 like the Roman numeral?
