Looking for some interesting mutant/weird/rare butterflies. Gynandromorph would be crazy awesome but I know that's probably not going to happen.

Also anything Dingo. A pelt would be awesome but I open to anything.

Comment with pics and prices please.

I posted like a week or two ago about the boar my barn owner gave me, and here's an update with an extra little somethin!

I tossed my doe head back there too, and to my surprise it's already way cleaner than the boar! So I moved the boar over closer to it, and they are cleaning up fast! They are also both FULL of wasps and fire ants.

My daughter and I are working on a mini Wonder Cabinet for our summer project, and they will make a splendid addition.  I just wish I could find a female to go with the display.  The females are flightless and live in shallow burrows, and are slightly larger than the males.  Much trickier to get.  If anyone can find one to sell or trade, could you let me know?

PS:  I would like to display one with wings open, and one with wings closed.  Anyone know how to do an insect display with open wings?  Thanks!

Pics of things I picked up at school, and some stuff that I've simply not shared before. The first section is from my college pickings.

I go to school in Pensacola -- is anyone here from there? I called a local Petland to ask about what they did with their dead stock (there was a very big Meller's chameleon that was obviously on his way out). They wouldn't let me have the chameleon, but I found out that somebody else had called the day before asking about their dead things and so I've been wondering if there's another FHBer running around there. :D

'Tis getting to be the season, and I need cicadas!  Whole bugs, wings, heads, anything (but especially wings).

I'll gladly pay for a small flat rate Priority Mail box full, and if you want I can even make you a steampunk resin pendant with bug parts and gears in it. :-D

[Tags|bugs, preservation]

Between a couple 'how to preserve bugs' threads here and my finding a huge grasshopper on my porch the other day, I decided to put together a quick guide on how to pin insects. Keep in mind that I'm an amateur at this and that I've still got a lot to learn, but I thought I'd share my knowledge (and enthusiasm!) anyways.

[music |Go Into The Water - Dethklok]

Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to this community and this is my first real post.
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the preservation of bugs?
A while ago my boyfriend found a Cicada Killer Wasp carrying away a Cicada. He attempted to catch the wasp but it was about two inches long and got scared when he tried to catch it. We learned later that Cicada killers are terrified of humans and only use their stinger to kill cicada's to plant their larvae in.

So my boyfriend walked off with the cicada and we were thinking about pinning and framing it but neither of us have any idea how. We noticed that around it's legs was starting to discolor and get white and dry almost powdery. I was hoping someone here would know something or somewhere for me to find more information about the preservation of insects.
Sorry if this isn't completely relevant!

Mealworms? [Jun. 22nd, 2010|09:46 pm]

[Tags|bugs, cleaning bones, mice]

Hello again all! I have three freshly dead baby mice. There's a warehouse not far from me that distributes bird/plant seed, and mice are bad for business, bad for bird health, and bad for the workers. So they have poison traps. I asked about having their mice, since they would just get thrown away anyway. So they have three freshly dead baby mice in a freezer. I'm hoping to use Mealworms to clean them. They are on the cheap side, plentiful in my area, and they come in a cup that I can drop the bodies in. And when they grow to adult hood, I can just let them go in the park or something. I'm new to this though, and I've never seen anything like this happen before.

Can Mealworms be used? Would the poison that killed the mice hurt the bugs? Should I skin the mice first, or just drop them in as-is. They aren't technically beetles, so I thought it'd be best to ask first before I mess anything up. I'm not really interested in the skin. HOWEVER! If anyone is interested in the pelts, please let me know, and I'll try skinning something. I'm not sure what "size" they are, as I haven't actually seen them yet. I pick them up Thursday (trucks come on Tuesday and Wednesday, so it's not safe to be there without an employee pass. But Thursday is safe.) All I know is that there are three baby mice killed by poison for safety reasons.

I'd like to be prepared, so I'm getting info today/tomorrow, and getting prepped tomorrow/Thursday.

Mites and moths! [Apr. 8th, 2010|06:43 pm]

[Tags|bugs]

I am having a terrible problem with my dead things! I don't know the correct methods for storage and now I am paying the price.

I've frozen / thawed / refrozen some of my smaller stuff, but I keep finding little casings and occasional moths around anyway. I have no idea what type of moth they are, but the bits that I'm assuming are their casings are cylindrical, papery and white, and maybe 5 mm long.

I'm particularly worried about two of my items, a hide-on nearly full horse tail and an epic creepy mask:

👁 Photobucket

(please excuse silliness, it's a LARP NPC and comes with a contractual obligation to be over-the-top, lol)

Right now the mask is on display in my room, and I think the feathers are starting to get mite-nibbled. It's too large to fit in the freezer. Is there any way I can kill the mites and halt any further damage?

With regards to the tail, what's the best way to protect it?
