Departing from their respective hometowns, two young women with identical names are brought together in their pursuit of new beginnings. With their hearts set on going to Tokyo, Nana Komatsu dreams about blissful love, while Nana Osaki aims for a successful music career.
The former has a cheerful and friendly nature, but her naivety has steered her romantic life astray until she meets her dependable boyfriendโShouji Endo. Without letting herself be dismayed by Shouji's decision to study in Tokyo, Nana works hard to earn enough money and follow him there. Meanwhile, her namesake is a solitary punk vocalist whose impassioned romance with her band's bassist, Ren Honjou, comes to a sudden end. Though heartbroken, Nana bravely looks forward and travels to the capital with the ambition of becoming a recognized artist.
Shortly after they arrive in Tokyo, the girls cross paths again due to an unexpected coincidence that ultimately leads them to live under the same roof. As they grow closer, the two strive to support one another amid their struggles to forge a future for themselves.
[Written by MAL Rewrite] After the release of the first episode on April 5, 2006, Nana's highest TV rating was 6.3% in the Kanto region, making it the first late-night anime to reach the top 10 of the weekly audience ranking.
In Japan, VAP published 17 DVDs of the series between July 7, 2006 and November 21, 2007. In North America, four DVD box sets were released by Viz Media from September 2009 to April 2010. The company also released an English dub version, which premiered on the Funimation Channel on September 19, 2009. Sentai Filmworks licensed the series in 2021 after Viz Media lost its rights.
Nana inspired a couple of tribute albums, the most notable of them being "Love for Nana - Only 1 Tribute," which was released by EMI Music Japan on March 16, 2005. | |

Okay but no one prepared me for how hard Nana was going to hit.
I started it thinking it was just going to be some cute early-2000s anime about friendship and musicโฆ and it literally emotionally destroyed me in the best way possible.
First of all, the fact that there are two girls named Nana? Iconic. But theyโre COMPLETE opposites. Nana Osaki is this punk rock, emotionally guarded, โI donโt need anyoneโ type, and Nana Komatsu (Hachi) is soft, romantic, and lowkey delusional about love. And somehow their friendship feels more intense than most romance stories. Like you can actually feel how much they need each other.
The

music?? Especially with Blast and Trapnest?? It makes everything feel 10x more dramatic. The whole vibe is so raw and real. It doesnโt romanticize love in a cringe way it shows how messy, selfish, obsessive, and painful it can be. The relationships are not perfect. People cheat. People lie. People stay when they shouldnโt. And thatโs what makes it hurt.
And donโt even get me started on the emotional depth. This anime understands loneliness in a way thatโs almost scary. The way it shows ambition vs. love, independence vs. attachment, dreams vs. realityโฆ itโs not just drama. It feels real. Like you see yourself in the characters, even when theyโre making bad decisions.
I cried. Multiple times. Not even dramatic crying like silent staring-at-the-wall-after-an-episode crying.
What makes Nana so special is that itโs not just about romance. Itโs about growing up. Itโs about how sometimes loving someone isnโt enough. Itโs about how timing can ruin everything. And the way the future scenes are hinted at?? It leaves this haunting feeling that never fully goes away.
Itโs deep. Itโs messy. Itโs painful. And I love it for that.
If you want something light and happy, donโt watch this. But if you want something that will emotionally change you a little bitโฆ Nana is that anime.
10/10. But also 0/10 for my mental stability after watching it

It has such great character building, the relationships and dialogue are real and beautiful. It's also funny, tender and cruel which would make for the most amazing show if it wasn't so infuriating with such dissatisfying conclusions. If you like to be kept on your tippy toes then this will definitely do it for you. I can see why the ending could be seen as beautiful in its own way but for me it did not hit the spot and it felt really awful, like all the happiness and sadness it made me feel up until the end was for nothing.

Perhaps one of the worst critically-acclaimed anime I've watched, ever. I don't know it was possible to have 47 episodes where none of the characters grow or learn from their mistakes. Character designs and voice direction is top notch, but it's in service of the most nothing story I've ever experienced. It starts in the same place where it ends.
I find it unbelievable that you can just have an anime where nothing happens ever.
Don't watch this unless you like watching slop.
If you found the contents of this review redundant, that's exactly the experience of watching it; forced to amble along for 47 long episodes,
...
just like how MAL is forcing me to write more and more about why this is horrible.

For many Dragon Ball fans, Master Roshi is an absolute legend! He's one of the coolest and most colorful characters in the Dragon Ball universe. However, this old man has a roaming eye that's easily distracted by the younger ladies, which can lead to more problems than simply a nosebleed.
