New Topic Proposal

I'd like to propose a new topic. The idea of best lessons learned, where you learned them, things of that nature. Give us the story behind it, cause we all love juicy details. I guess I'll start out.

I learned the first year I even knew the first inklings of what goth was, that you just had to find people that you really connected with, who would support you and understand your personal beliefs, interests, etc.

The only place I ever felt that was in the goth subculture. I started meeting folks, and it was just so amazing. I wore something that I liked and actually got compliments instead of harsh, disapproving looks. When you're just starting to explore yourself, it's such an amazing thing. If I remember correctly, the first time it happened was at a Halloween event for a group called Sanctus. I was passed around and introduced to different folks, and it was so interesting because they were amazed someone my age (18, at the time) was willing to try something like that (a Victorian inspired steampunk suit).

It was the moment that I realized there would always be folks who supported my looks, no matter where I went, and that I wasn't alone in what I thought looked good.

Anyways, I'm yammering on. So let's hear more stories.

Gothic Lolita

I was wondering what everyone thinks of Gothic Lolita fashion?
I know in the western Gothic community some of us really like it (myself included, I wear a good deal of kurololi (black lolita) or gothloli dresses) and know exactly what it is, some like it and aren't too sure what it is, exactly, some are indifferent and some detest it and find it silly in comparison to western Goth, maybe because it's seen as a fashion statement versus a lifestyle (ie, wearing the clothes, listening to the music, reading the literature)although there are certainly "lifestyle Lolitas" and Gothic Lolita lifestyle is much different from sweet, classic, etc).
Just wondering! Personally, I'm fond of old-school goth, romantic goth (what I usually refer to as Gothic Aristocrat), steampunk AND Gothic Lolita.

Oh dear, I hope this most made sense. I might be rambling a bit, I'm up to the eyeballs in poli sci homework.

Cool project	[May. 20th, 2008\|05:47 pm] Gothology
gothcitymaps is looking for people interested in creating Google maps to highlight local resources that would be interesting to the goth and alternative communities. They are hoping to combine all of the maps into an international website for goth travelers,so that the next time you are going to someplace new you will have an easy time of finding cool spots to visit. Since the maps are collaborated upon by locals, they will be more accurate and up to date!

So, where is this going?	[Apr. 2nd, 2008\|02:33 am] Gothology
I'm cleaning my friends list and I'm wondering whether it makes sense to keep this community on it. I've truly enjoyed the discussions here, so I don't want to leave just like that. But I hate being involved with tons of things that aren't actually existing anymore, so I'd rather not keep this in my list forever, hoping for a new topic. So, help me out here. Do we want to do something with this community and get it back to a more active level, or do we officially declare its death? (To anyone who interpreted the subject line as one of those Deep Questions about the purpose of life and all that, please feel free to go all existential on me and utter your philosophical ramblings. Honestly, I wouldn't want to disappoint anyone by disturbingly down-to-earth questions.)

Pondering

So, after having an interesting conversation (yelling across a bookstore to my ex who was giving me shit for reading Gothic Beauty) I got to thinking...

What is goth?

To be honest, there are sooo many types. You have deathrock, gravers, neogoths, rivets (don't argue, they are lumped into goth as well), romantigoths, victorian goths, vampire goths, cyber goths, etc... The list goes on.

The odd thing is how so many people who fall into these will defend to the death that their style of goth is the "only true goth" and that all others are in no way, shape, or form, goth... Deathrockers will claim that goth is dead and no one these days listens to REAL goth. Anything with electronics meshed in is considered techno, or the like. Neo-goths and gravers will say that all the old stuff was just 80's music and not really goth. Then the goths who listen to only ambient music will say that all the other music is too upbeat to be goth...

It is really quite ridiculous how much squabbling there is withing the scene. You would figure that with so many people against us, we might find some way to accept our goth brothers and sisters. But no... Are we that accepting? No...

Alas, it seems that we will all have constant struggles with other goths and most of us shall forever have the "gother than thou" mentality. *sigh*

It seems that for most of us, we shall never exceed the cliquish mentality of most high school students.

Essay Request Coming Through!

I apologize if I'm doing anything wrong by posting this here. I'm in the process of writing a paper where I define 'goth'. I've been told to use two reliable sources, but that the points I discuss are all my ideas. Simply using the two sources to support my ideas, I guess. I'm hoping to write on:

music
fashion

I am also in need of a third point. Where I am struggling most is how to focus down those broad points into something manageable. I'm really in need of the help.

Most of all, the reliable sources are the stumbling blocks. Books, websites that are sure to be right, whatever could be given. I must say this, though. Wikipedia is not an option.

I thank all of you again, both for any help you might bring, as well as allowing me this space.

Excuse my Malfeasance/Tardiness

What conflicts have you had because of your lifestyle? Have you had to make any gothy sacrifices for your career/job, or is your workplace very accepting of who you are? Is your job oriented around anything gothy? Finally, what sort of job would you possibly enjoy having that incorporates things you enjoy such as the gothic subculture?

I have been fortunate that I have not had to make any sacrifices in at least the last two years for anything. However, in the Army I had to cover up my tattoos (of course) but having naturally black hair, I could just dye it slightly a brasher black and there were no issues there. I was often called a "Ghost" by some people, but I didn't mind it.

I am working toward a BSW with a minor in Sociology and possible double major or double minor (I remain undecided) in Spanish. I intend to work with At-Risk-Youth in the Barrio or Capitol Hill <- both pretty tough parts of Denver and it is my understanding that as part of my job I need to look, "cool" as it were so the local kids will relate to me. I am not sure how many tattoos I will have to cover up, but I know I can have a pierced nose.

My style has mellowed somewhat at any rate, that seems to be the natural progression for me. That's not to say that I have sold-out or that I could be mistaken for anything other than a Goth; but I look more like a Gothic mom than anything else. I dress in what is comfortable which for me is all black (of course,) but I do not put a lot of thought in what I wear out to drop the kids or to school myself. I am just comfortable.

Yet, when I am in club mode, I pretty much prefer my old style and the closest thing to call that is "ethereal/romantic." Unfortunately, with M. being not Gothic and three kids, two dogs, it is very difficult to go anywhere. Fortunately M. has an open-mind, so when we go out with my friends he has no problem mixing about my Gothic friends and the clubs, bars, shows around here. No one seems to mind that I am dressed to the nines and M. is in a lime green polo shirt and flip flops.

Short story long: I have been fortunate not to have to make any sacrifices. I am who I am and that seems to work out lovely. I do like the Corporate Goth look, so if that is what I must do when I get my degree (which I highly doubt) then I will love exploring that look.
