Wanted to share some of my carnivorous plants pics. Mostly nepenthes (tropical pitcher plants) since those are my favorites. I keep some of my nepenths as house plants, some outdoors and some in terrariums.

First is the Nepenthes bicalcarata. The fanged nepenthes. This is a true lowlander needing warm nights.

Succession planting in containers [Apr. 14th, 2012|05:59 pm]
Indoor Gardeners
πŸ‘ Image

Every year I tell myself that I'm going to start my garden earlier to maximize my growing season by planning my space more carefully and utilizing succession planting. And every year I get excited while it's still winter and then burn myself out a little and before I know it time has dribbled away and it's time to get the main summer plants in the pots. This year I managed to get a little bit of a head start, but even then the winter here in the mid-west was so mild that it segued into spring really early (even edging into summer in mid-March with temperatures soaring up near 90 several days), so once again I got caught a little unprepared. I did managed to get some 'spring crops' in though (Packman broccoli, bok choy, some lettuce and Swiss Chard-though that'll go most of the summer). So I decided, what the hell, I'll plan for the fall and have a solid plan in place for next spring. I'll talk about the details of my own garden when I post my first pics in just a bit.

I'll put this first part under a cut, both to save your screens and to separate it from the rest since it's taken directly from another source.Collapse )

The above lists are (for the most part) a little more unusual, to broaden your horizons. You can, of course, substitute your preferences. Here’s something I found with lists of more common vegetables and their general planting times/seasons:

Perennial Crops (that need a permanent home:
Asparagus, Rhubarb, Chives, Horseradish, Winter Onions

Crops that occupy the ground only the first part of the season:
Early Beets, Early Cabbage, Lettuce, Onion Sets, Peas, Radishes, Early Spinach, Mustard, Turnips

Crops that occupy the ground the major portion of the season:
Bush and Pole Beans, Lima Beans, Cabbage, Celery, Sweet Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Muskmelons, Okra, Peppers, Potatoes, Pumpkin, Squash, Tomatoes, Watermelon, Swiss Chard

Crops to be planted in July or later for fall and winter gardens:
Bush Beans, Beets, Broccoli, Chinese Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Endive, Kale, Kohlrabi, Radishes, Spinach, Turnips, Collards, Lettuce,

And one more with a slide show and lovely pictures!

Would anyone be interested in ideas for 'theme' gardens in a pot (or group of small pots)? Like an herbal tea garden, an Asian or Mediterranean garden, etc?

I have a Burro's tail plant that is several years old and it has never bloomed. Until today I didn't even know they did.

Can anybody tell me what conditions are required for it to flower?

A Gifted Bonsai [Jan. 20th, 2011|01:25 pm]

I was given a bonsai as a gift from a client. It's a 'green mound juniper' in a very nice little ceramic, wide base with a catch tray of rocks. It's kind of sad on one side but round on the other and has little shafts sticking out from the sides. Below is a slightly blurry slightly dark iphone snapshot of it.

It says it's an outdoor plant so I won't be leaving it here at work but... help? I have a black thumb and I'd like to keep this little tree alive. What should I do to make this tree more beautiful, bigger, etc?

root-knot nematodes? [Jan. 2nd, 2011|04:00 pm]

The prayer plant in front of the window by my bedside table was looking rather sad for couples of months now. New young shoot will come up, but shortly tip and sometime the whole leaf will turn yellow and eventually dry up. I kept thinking it must be the Rosina disease, the one that get water once in a while and occasionally none at all for weeks. :-) Anyhow, during the holiday I decided to repot it, give it some good soil and make a New Year resolution to never forgot watering again.

Once I dig it up, I found these little balls at the end of the root tips. The soil is very sandy and roots are fine and seem dry.

I done a bit internet research on prayer plants root, so far these look like Root-knot nematodes, which is a plant-parasitic nematodes infect plant roots, causing the development of root-knot galls that drain the plant's photosynthate and nutrients.  But after some more digging I found that prayer plant tend to have a rhizomatous, bulbous root structure... so this maybe very normal.

Any of you have experience with prayer plant and know what this is about?

Oh, cats. [Aug. 2nd, 2010|01:44 pm]

[Current Music |Hank III]

Hi everyone, I just joined and have never had a garden but would like to attempt one soon.

I'm interested in doing an indoor vegetable or herb garden, I have a window with lots of light and a broad ledge, which would be perfect. I'm not too concerned about the gardening aspect because my mom can help me out. However, I am concerned about my cat. I've never met a cat with a nicer personality, but I've also never met a more destructive cat. She's exceptionally good at climbing, we've had issues with her getting into the ceiling a few times.

Does anyone have suggestions for cat-proofing an indoor garden? Preferably something that's relatively cheap/easy to make, and more importantly, isn't an eyesore.

Plant ID [May. 25th, 2010|02:39 am]

I recently picked up a neat looking tree-like plant from Walgreens. The base is this nut (or two, a green "fruit." What it is, it's solid but not woody) that has stalks and then the stalks have stems with long slender but oval shaped (the ends of each leaf come to a point).

I'll try to get a pic but any ideas?

grow lights? [Mar. 10th, 2010|08:32 pm]
Indoor Gardeners
πŸ‘ Image

Hi all, IT HAS BEGUN!
I have picked up a boat load of seeds and soil in the store today, all excited about spring.
I have a bow window that is a great place for my seedlings, but despite many windows,
my house doesn't get much direct light. This is the one place my shoe-box apartment won out- we used to have an east-facing kitchen window and door.

I was thinking of having my husband install a small light in the ceiling of the bow window area to
help the plants along. I am overwhelmed by the prices and variety available on ye olde internets.
I've even seen suggestions that a fluorescent shop light would even work.

I won't be growing them in the dark, I just need to supplement to make up for facing the wrong way and having big trees in the front yard.

Any suggestions, recommendations or tales of WIN or FAIL?
Thanks!

Christmas Cactus turning purple? [Feb. 21st, 2010|07:51 pm]

My Christmas Cactus is still flowering, has been since near Christmas. In the past it's new growth was sort of purple. Now it looks like the entire green portion of the cactus is a purple shade. It also looks droopy. I over watered it like a month ago and let it dry out and have been watering carefully. The plant hasn't been repotted since I got it over 3 years ago and I have no idea when it was repotted last. I believe the plant is fairly old.

Is it a sun burn? It gets mostly bright light from south east for a few hours.

Is it time to repot? Not enough nutrients in the soil?

thanks:)

I know I shouldn't have done it, but I couldn't help myself. I bought a bonsai from Walmart.
It seems to be in good condition. They must not have had it very long. It was quite dry when I brought it home, but I fixed that.
Now I need to know how to keep it healthy. While I have been fascinated by the art of bonsai for years, I have never taken the time to really find out how to care for a plant that has been developed in this way.
I will of course google to find care instructions, but I'm wondering if anyone here has any personal experience they would be willing to share. It would also be wonderful if someone could tell me what species I have.
