Many of these bursaries and Academic Grants are made possible through the generosity and commitment of our donors. Bursaries are based solely on financial need. The Manske-MacLean Bursaries in Chemistry initial funds for these awards were realized through the sale of specimens (alkaloids and related compounds), from the research collections of the late R.H.F. Manske (1901-1977) and the late D.B. MacLean, and were augmented by a generous donation from Merck-Frosst, Montreal. R.H.F. Manske, BSc, MSc. (Queen’s), PhD (Manchester), DSc Hon (McMaster) conducted pioneering research in alkaloid chemistry and was founding editor of ‘The Alkaloids’ a definitive and ongoing series in this area of chemistry. D.B. MacLean was introduced to alkaloid chemistry by Manske at the Research Laboratories of the Dominion Rubber Co. The study of alkaloids and related heterocycles became the focus of his research at McMaster, which he joined in 1954. He was Professor Emeritus in the department of chemistry. These bursaries are to be awarded to graduate students in chemistry by the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the chair of the department of chemistry.

A bursary is based solely on financial need. In most cases, information from your OSAP application is used to determine your financial need (some students who don’t receive OSAP can still apply for a bursary).
The McMaster Graduate General Bursary Program application opens mid-August in AwardSpring. Funding is paid out in mid-February.

The Catherine Jane Stephenson Memorial Bursary was established in 2005 by Jean and Bruce Stephenson in memory of their daughter Catherine Jane Stephenson, a 1978 graduate of McMaster University. The Cecil and Yvette Yip Graduate Bursaries were established in 2003 by Dr. Cecil Yip (Class of 1959) and Mrs. Yvette Yip to recognize and encourage graduate students whose innovative work in the physical sciences and engineering crosses formal disciplinary boundaries. Preference will be given to students in any graduate program in the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering, whose thesis research demonstrates excellence in integrating engineering science within the study of biology. The students must also demonstrate financial need to be eligible. A variable number of bursaries are to be awarded by the School of Graduate Studies.

The Diane and Colin Wood Bursary in Respiratory Health was established in 2008 by Diane Wood and Colin Wood, BComm (Class of ’78). To be granted by the School of Graduate Studies, on the recommendation of the director of the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, to a graduate student who demonstrates financial need and is conducting research in the area of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Preference will be given to students studying emphysema.

The Dr. Jordan Page Harsham Bursary was established in 2011 by the Harshman Fellowships Society to honour Dr. Jordon Page Harshman, past president of the society. To be awarded annually by the School of Graduate Studies, based on the recommendation of the Associate Dean, Health Sciences (Graduate), to a graduate student in the Faculty of Health Sciences who is engaged in medical research and who demonstrates financial need as well as good citizenship, good social responsibility, and leadership in society. Preference will be given to students in the following three areas in descending order: The Michael G. DeGroote institute for Infectious Disease Research, the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute and the department of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics. Recipients will be provided with a certificate from the Faculty of Health Sciences detailing the purpose and history of this award at McMaster University. Students who are recipients of an Ontario Graduate Scholarship are not eligible for this Bursary.

The Dr. Walter Smeltzer Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000 by Mrs. Grace Smeltzer in memory of her husband, Dr. Walter William Smeltzer, researcher and professor in Materials Science at McMaster University from 1959 to 1992. The scholarship is to be awarded to a student in the department of materials science and engineering (MSE) who is deemed to have submitted the most outstanding graduate thesis over the previous two-year period. The GSA Travel Assistance Grants are funded from the proceeds of the Graduate Students Association Development Fund, which receives contributions from graduate students and the University. The GSA Travel Assistance Grants fund is administered through the School of Graduate Studies. The Albert Shalom Travel Scholarship (Philosophy) was established in 1994 by family, friends and colleagues of Albert Shalom, professor of Philosophy at McMaster University from 1966 to 1991. The scholarship is to be awarded by the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the department of Philosophy. The award is available to graduate students registered in a Philosophy program to help support travel costs associated with study overseas as part of their graduate program.

The H.Vincent Elliott Memorial Travel Bursary was established in 2010 by Dr. Susan J.Elliott (MA `97 and PhD`92), esteemed former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, professor of Geography and Earth Sciences, and senior research fellow at the United Nations Institute on Water (UNU-IWEH), Environment and Health, in memory of her father, H.Vincent Elliott. To be granted by the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation on the program director of ‘Water Without Borders’ to students registered in a Master’s or PhD program will be given to students in financial need.

An accomplished scientist and competitive athlete, Dr. Cermak was a passionate advocate for translational research that could enhance human health and performance. Throughout the seed funding period, the fund will support a travel scholarship, valued at $4,000 annually, to support travel to Kenya, India and other locations identified with the Philomathia project. This award was established in 1994 in honour of Dr. Walter Gibbins, who received his Ph.D. in Geology at McMaster in 1974. A well-known geologist, Walter held the position of Artic District Geologist for the Department of Indian Affairs in Northern Development, based in Yellowknife. It is to be awarded annually to a graduate student in Earth Sciences, with a preference for a student studying Geology by the School of Graduate studies on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Earth, Environment & Society. This award will help support travel costs to deliver a paper at an international research conference.

The Yates Scholarship Fund (up to $500) was established in 1963 by the bequest of William Henry Yates. This fund support upper-level doctoral students with research activities and conference travel when a paper is being delivered. Applicants must have completed their comprehensive exam.
