The ongoing Middle East Crisis, sparked by Hamas's massacre on October 7, 2023, is widely seen as... more The ongoing Middle East Crisis, sparked by Hamas's massacre on October 7, 2023, is widely seen as a seismic upheaval. Yet, debate persists over its long-term implications for Israel's security, with some even suggesting things will return to their pre-war trajectory, once tensions abate. 1 This paper, though, contends that "October 7" marks a pivotal shift in Israel's regional standing, best analyzed through the paradigm of the post-Cold-War American-led "liberal international order", the war both reflecting this order's erosion and accelerating its further decline. It will be shown that Israel's regional future is inseparable from the fate of this global order, that Israel is simultaneously skeptical of, central to and reliant on. While academics focused on Israel or the Middle East often treat Israel in isolation from its regional context, 2 international relations research also tends to neglect Israel. 3 Few studies explore the interplay between the West, especially the U.S., and Israel's regional status. As a result, simplistic narratives -such as Israel as a defender of Western values, an agent of U.S. imperialism, or a manipulator of U.S. policy -prevail in public discourse. 4 But linking the global and the regional is possible via the concept of the "liberal international order". With respect to this term, despite criticisms of its analytical utility, 5 a dual conceptual core can be identified: an ideational and a geopolitical one. The ideational aspect centers on liberalism, understood as freedom from arbitrary power, and the geopolitical dimension
