The town of Novai︠a︡ Derevnai︠a︡ [no publs. in LC data base] arose in 1893 in connection with the construction of the Transsibirskai︠a︡ zheleznodorozhnai︠a︡ magistralʹ across the Obʹ River. In 1894 the town was renamed Novonikolaevskiĭ [no publs. in LC data base], and in Jan 1904 (Dec. 1903 old style) the town was again renamed as Novonikolaevsk and belonged to the Tobolskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡. Soviet power was first established there in Dec. 1917, but the city was seized by White Army troops under General Denikin and remained occupied by them from May 1918 to Dec. 1919 when Novonikolaevsk was liberated by the Red Army. From 1921-1925 Novonikolaevsk was the admin. center of Novonikolaevskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡; from 1925 when it was renamed Novosibirsk it was an okruzhnyĭ (district) city of the Sibirskiĭ kraĭ.; from 1930 it was the admin. center of the Zapadno-Sibirskiĭ kraĭ; and from 1937 it was the admin. center of Novosibirskai︠a︡ oblastʹ)
