In 2014, while the mandate of the previous National Council of Universities for anthropology (201... more In 2014, while the mandate of the previous National Council of Universities for anthropology (2011Universities for anthropology ( -2015) ) was coming to an end, Jean-Pierre Bocquet-Appel, who sat on it, expressed the wish that Council members discuss the future of the association of social anthropology-ethnology, biological anthropology and prehistory collegially. In his view, such an association was becoming meaningless due to the increasingly divergent construction of knowledge in these different disciplinary fields. With Jean-Pierre and Charles Stépanoff of the Laboratoire d'Anthropologie sociale, we created a working group to assess the evolution of these partnerships and identify several avenues for renewing the interdisciplinary dialogue. This paper summarizes the content of this joint reflection which led to the publication of an Op-Ed article in L'Homme, the flagship journal of social anthropology in France.

Afin de répondre aux nécessités de l’intensification agricole dont dépend leur survie, les petits... more Afin de répondre aux nécessités de l’intensification agricole dont dépend leur survie, les petits exploitants thaïlandais font un usage croissant des pesticides. Sur la base d’une enquête quantitative et qualitative réalisée en août 2019 auprès de cent agriculteurs de deux villages de la province de Khon Kaen, et des résultats de tests réalisés à grande échelle par les services de santé publique thaïlandais, l’auteur met en lumière l’impact des pesticides sur la santé des petits exploitants, ainsi que la perception qu’ils ont des risques sanitaires et environnementaux importants auxquels les expose l’emploi massif de ces produits. L’article examine aussi les réponses variées que les agriculteurs apportent aux incitations gouvernementales à la transition écologique, suivant le régime de contraintes auxquels ils sont soumis, dans un contexte d’accidents climatiques répétés à fort impact sur les rendements et de fluctuation très importantes des cours mondiaux des produits agricoles commercialisés (riz, canne à sucre notamment).

Affiliation to Theravāda Buddhism is for the Lue of the former Sipsong Panna principalities (main... more Affiliation to Theravāda Buddhism is for the Lue of the former Sipsong Panna principalities (mainland China) a major criterion of civilization, which distinguishes them from their neighbours, either Han Chinese or hill tribes. The considerable amount of energy the Lue expended, following the liberalization of the cult in the early 1980s, to reinstate the local clergy, which had been repressed in the 1950s and banned in 1966, provides evidence of their strong identification with Buddhism. On the basis of fieldwork conducted in 1993 and 1997, the author relates the main features of the revival of Lue Buddhism in the Sipsong Panna, a generation (twenty years) after it started.
