The theme of the rally was “India Out”, a slogan coined two years ago by protesters who claimed that the MDP government led by President Ibrahim Solih had “sold out” the Maldives to India.
Abdulla Yameen served as the President of the Maldives for five years from 2013-2018. He was charged with money laundering in February by the Maldivian police, the trial for which began in the criminal court in April.
In a surprise result, Abdulla Yameen lost his re-election bid last month and initially conceded defeat. Last week, however, his lawyers went to the Supreme Court, saying his supporters had complained about rigging of votes and fraudulent ballot papers.
After the defeat of Yameen, Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Solih. China's Ambassador to the Maldives Zhang Lizhong also called on Solih as mark of China's support to the power transition in Male.
Solih defeated incumbent Abdulla Yameen in a dramatic election, following reports over the previous week of attempts at voter intimidation and the absence of credible international observers to monitor the poll process amid fears of rigging.
The Maldives has been beset by political instability since a police mutiny forced its first democratically elected leader, Mohamed Nasheed, out of office in 2012.
