Scammers are using fear, shame, and fake police identities to extort money by falsely accusing victims of viewing explicit content online. In this edition of The Safe Side, we unpack how this scam operates and ways to stay safe from it.
In terms of total offences registered under the Indian Penal Code, Maharashtra was the second in the state after Uttar Pradesh, recording 3.74 lakh offences as against UP at 4.01 lakhs.
Around 3,338 of them were related to financial frauds amounting to Rs 3.09 crore, police said, adding that they managed to freeze Rs 1.20 crore in deposits and refunded Rs 51.12 lakh to victims.
