Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) BIOGRAPHY

Last Updated : 11 Feb 2025
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK): A Legacy of Dravidian Politics Founded on September 17, 1949, by C.N. Annadurai, the DMK emerged as a breakaway faction from the Dravidar Kazhagam. Annadurai, its first General Secretary, led the party to a historic victory in the 1967 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, ...marking the first non-Congress majority government in any Indian state. His successor, M. Karunanidhi, served as Chief Minister for five terms, solidifying the DMK's dominance in state politics. Following Karunanidhi's death in 2018, his son M.K. Stalin assumed the presidency and subsequently became Chief Minister in May 2021. The DMK's ideology is rooted in Dravidian nationalism, advocating for social justice, Tamil language and culture, and state autonomy. Key policy positions include promoting Tamil language and culture, affirmative action for socially backward communities, and economic development focused on social welfare. The party currently holds 125 seats in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, leading the Secular Progressive Alliance with 159 out of 234 seats. The DMK is also the fourth-largest party in the Lok Sabha. While the DMK's achievements include significant strides in social justice and infrastructure development, the party's history also includes controversies and legal battles. Its electoral performance has been a mix of victories and defeats, reflecting the dynamic nature of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. The party’s core principles continue to resonate with a significant portion of the Tamil electorate, shaping its enduring presence in the state's political arena.
