The Madras High Court was hearing appeals filed by four convicts challenging a 2023 judgment of a trial court in Dindigul, which had sentenced them to life imprisonment in a 2012 double murder case.
Noting that the witnesses turned hostile and underlining inconsistencies in the statements of the victim’s family members, the Jharkhand High Court said the prosecution could not prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The convicts were found guilty of attempt to murder and dacoity among other charges. The violence was triggered by an alleged act of disrespect towards a religious book.
The prosecution's case rests mainly on a confession allegedly made by the accused woman herself and which was recorded by the magistrate, the Meghalaya High Court noted.
