Mumbai Indians hit rock-bottom in the IPL 2024 season where a Hardik Pandya return did not help the side return to their prime status.
Honed by the franchise in his early days, Pandya was named captain, replacing Rohit, ahead of the IPL 2024 auction.
MI only won two of their first seven games and could not lift their campaign from thereafter as Hardik's return to the Wankhede Stadium amid jeers from the crowd ended on a sluggish note. The campaign turned from bad to worse as MI finished at the bottom of the table with four wins and eight points, marking only the second time in 16 years that they finished at the bottom of the table.
Despite reports of friction between the team's superstar players, Mumbai have begun their revamp for a fresh cycle by retaining their superstar quartet in Rohit Sharma, Hardik, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah besides the rising star in Tilak Varma.
Mumbai remain the joint-most successful side in IPL history with five titles alongside Chennai Super Kings. Under the leadership of a young captain in Rohit, MI won their first title in 2013 and backed it up with triumphs in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2019. Rohit is also the leading run-scorer for Mumbai in the IPL, with 5458 runs from 212 appearances.
MI retentions for IPL 2026: Hardik Pandya (C), Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah, Deepak Chahar, Naman Dhir, Raj Angad Bawa, Ashwani Kumar, Robin Minz (WK), Raghu Sharma, Ryan Rickelton (WK), Corbin Bosch, Will Jacks, Trent Boult, Mitchell Santner, Allah Ghazanfar
