Ranjan Gogoi was the Chief Justice of India from October 3, 2018 to November 17, 2019. He was sworn in as a member of the Rajya Sabha on March 19, 2020. Gogoi is the son of former Assam Chief Minister Keshab Chandra Gogoi. He was elevated as the Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court on February 12, 2011. A year later, he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on April 23, 2012.
Appearing before the committee as a part of its consultations with legal and Constitutional experts, Gogoi is learnt to have said that Article 82A (5) may not pass the Constitutional test and gives too much power to the Election Commission.
“I think it is an important step towards national integration. It does not come in conflict with Articles 25 and 26 (of the Constitution), which is the right to religion," he said.
The political system should be able to adapt the Constitution to challenging times. The ‘cancel culture’ of foreclosing debate serves neither the cause of justice nor of democratic deepening
Delivering the Third Ramnath Goenka Memorial Lecture on July 12, 2018, as CJI designate, Gogoi cited the SC’s development of the Basic Structure doctrine as an example of “very sound jurisprudence which we continue to reap from.”
In an exclusive conversation with The Indian Express, Gogoi expressed his views on action against individuals over social media posts in wake of the arrest of Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani by the Assam police.
According to a notification, the President appointed Rahul Bharti and Moksha Khajuria Kazmi as Additional Judges of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh for two years.
🔴 Coomi Kapoor writes: Rahul Gandhi's remarks were too philosophical for the average listener and he played into the BJP’s hands since the ruling party, fearing that it is on a weak wicket on prices, is keen to exploit the Hindutva card in UP.
Once appointed, Bobde, the second seniormost judge in the apex court after Gogoi, will enjoy a tenure of one year and five months as CJI— until April 23, 2021.
