⇱ 14th Finance Commission on 2-day Gujarat visit from today | Ahmedabad News - The Indian Express


Fourteenth Finance Commission which has been given the mandate of allocating share out of Central taxes to the state governments under the Constitution is on a two-day visit to Gujarat from Monday,said an official press release from the Gujarat Government on Sunday.

The state government is going to “plead” higher allocation of Central taxes for the state than the one allocated by the 13th Finance Commission to Gujarat,3.04 per cent out of the shareable kitty of taxes of the Centre,the release added.

Seeking higher allocation,the state government is “going to submit an effective memorandum backed up by presentation” to the Commission,the release further stated.

The Commission was set up by the Centre early in 2013 and is expected to submit its report by October next year. The period for which the Commission will recommend share of states in the Central taxes will be from April 1,2015 to March 31,2020.

The Commission is headed by Dr Y V Reddy – former Governor of Reserve Bank of India – as its chairperson. The other members of the Commission include Professor Abhijit Sen — Member of Planning Commission and a Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University,Dr Sudipto Mundle – former Chairman of National Statistical Commission,Dr M Govind Rao — former Director of National Institute of Public Finance and Policy,and Sushma Nath – (retired) Secretary of the Central Government. A N Jha,an IAS officer in the rank of Additional Secretary to the Central Government ,is the Member-Secretary of the Commission.

On the first day of its visit,the Commission is scheduled to visit some of the projects of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation like BRTS and Sabarmati Riverfront in the forenoon. In the afternoon,the Commission is planned to hold consultation with representatives of local bodies,chamber of commerce and political parties in three separate meetings.

On Tuesday,the Commission is scheduled to hold discussions with the state government in a meeting to be chaired by Chief Minister Narendra Modi at Mahatma Mandir. Subsequently,in the afternoon,the Commission will be divided into two groups and each group is expected to make certain visits.

First group will visit the State Load Dispatch Centre of Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited at Vadodara. The same group will also visit ITI and Kaushalya Vardhan Kendra in the region. The second group is likely to visit the Water Pumping Station of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited at Dhanki in Surendranagar district “to understand the magnitude of efforts made by Gujarat for meeting with water scarcity problem in Saurashtra and Kutch.”
