Delhi Malviya Nagar Fire Live Updates: The Delhi government Thursday announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of each of those deceased in the fire that broke out at a B&B restaurant in Malviya Nagar a day earlier. Those who have been seriously injured will receive Rs 5 lakh in assistance, the Chief Minister’s Office announced over a post on X. It also informed that Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the Max Hospital in Saket to meet those injured in the Malviya Nagar fire tragedy and review their treatment.

An investigation into the fire at Flourish Stays B&B in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, which claimed 21 lives, revealed the owner, Luv Kesh Bajaj, operated two other properties in the area which are now under scrutiny for alleged safety and regulatory violations, according to police sources. Preliminary inspections of both establishments have allegedly uncovered multiple violations, including unauthorised construction, inadequate fire-safety arrangements and the presence of only a single entry-exit stairway.

Owner arrested: A day earlier, the Delhi Police detained Bajaj, and lodged an FIR against unknown individuals on the charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Police said that 60-year-old Bajaj, who resides in Saket, was arrested after allegedly attempting to evade authorities by frequently changing locations in Saket and switching vehicles before heading to the residence of a known acquaintance.

Canada and the UAE have condoled the fire incident in New Delhi that killed at least 21 people, including 12 foreigners, and left dozens injured.

A massive fire broke out in a building in south Delhi on Wednesday, killing 21 people - most of them were foreigners who had either come for medical treatment or were accompanying patients in a private hospital nearby.

"Deeply saddened by the tragic fire that claimed at least 21 lives and injured many others in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi," said Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in a X post on Thursday.

"Canada stands with India during this devastating time, and I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected," said Anand, adding that she is in touch with her Indian counterpart S Jaishankar to convey Canada's solidarity.

The building in which the fire incident took place reportedly had a bread-and-breakfast facility, but the police are yet to ascertain the cause of the fire. About 40 people were rescued and rushed to the hospital, officials said.

The UAE Foreign Ministry on Wednesday extended condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, and to the government and people of India, over the tragedy.

"The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed its solidarity with the Republic of India following a fire at a hotel in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, which resulted in a number of deaths and injuries," it said in an official statement. The UAE wished for the speedy recovery of the injured, according to the statement.

When the Delhi Police questioned Lavkesh Bajaj, the owner of the restaurant where a fire broke out on Wednesday claiming 21 lives, he said he had increased the number of rooms in the hotel because the business was generating good profits and because ‘ mein sab chalta hai (everything goes in Delhi)'.

Police said Bajaj also claimed he did not have enough time to personally manage the hotel, so he hired staff to handle all operations.

Lavkesh's comments came after an initial probe into the incident revealed that the hotel premises was operating 26 rooms against a permit for 6, it had no NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the fire department, and was filled with flammable decor.

Taking cognisance of the Malviya Nagar restaurant fire in Delhi on Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Thursday ordered special security inspection of hotels and commercial establishments in the state, news agency ANI reported.

The CM directed officials across development authorities, police departments, Public Works Department (PWD), and fire departments, along with other departments, to ensure that all high-rise buildings, offices, hotels, and commercial establishments should be thoroughly inspected, and that fire safety systems should be in place, the report stated.

"The hospital promptly activated its mass-casualty response protocols and mobilized all available clinical and support resources to ensure timely and comprehensive care for those affected. Our teams continue to provide round-the-clock medical attention to the patients under treatment. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives," the hospital added.
