Delhi Malviya Nagar Fire Live Updates: Canada, UAE condole Delhi fire that killed 21

Canada and the UAE have condoled the fire incident in New Delhi that killed at least 21 people, including 12 foreigners, and left dozens injured.

A massive fire broke out in a building in south Delhi on Wednesday, killing 21 people - most of them were foreigners who had either come for medical treatment or were accompanying patients in a private hospital nearby.

"Deeply saddened by the tragic fire that claimed at least 21 lives and injured many others in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi," said Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in a X post on Thursday.

"Canada stands with India during this devastating time, and I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected," said Anand, adding that she is in touch with her Indian counterpart S Jaishankar to convey Canada's solidarity.

The building in which the fire incident took place reportedly had a bread-and-breakfast facility, but the police are yet to ascertain the cause of the fire. About 40 people were rescued and rushed to the hospital, officials said.

The UAE Foreign Ministry on Wednesday extended condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, and to the government and people of India, over the tragedy.

"The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed its solidarity with the Republic of India following a fire at a hotel in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, which resulted in a number of deaths and injuries," it said in an official statement. The UAE wished for the speedy recovery of the injured, according to the statement.

The Delhi government Thursday announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of each of those deceased in the fire that broke out at a B&B restaurant in Malviya Nagar a day earlier.

Delhi Malviya Nagar Fire Live Updates: ‘Delhi mein sab chalta hai’, Here's what hotel owner where 21 died told cops

When the Delhi Police questioned Lavkesh Bajaj, the owner of the restaurant where a fire broke out on Wednesday claiming 21 lives, he said he had increased the number of rooms in the hotel because the business was generating good profits and because ‘ mein sab chalta hai (everything goes in Delhi)'.

Police said Bajaj also claimed he did not have enough time to personally manage the hotel, so he hired staff to handle all operations.

Lavkesh's comments came after an initial probe into the incident revealed that the hotel premises was operating 26 rooms against a permit for 6, it had no NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the fire department, and was filled with flammable decor.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Thursday visited the Max Hospital in Saket to meet those injured in the Malviya Nagar fire tragedy and review their treatment, news agency ANI reported.

Speaking to reporters, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Satish Upadhyay said the CM interacted with the victims and their families, stressing on ensuring best possible medical care as the government’s top priority.

"The CM visited (Max Hospital, Saket) here today. A total of 17 people are admitted here. Out of which, seven people are on ventilator support. The CM has spoken to them (victims), and our priority is that they get good treatment. The health condition of the victims has significantly improved since yesterday. Taking cognisance of the Malviya Nagar restaurant fire in Delhi on Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Thursday ordered special security inspection of hotels and commercial establishments in the state, news agency ANI reported.

The CM directed officials across development authorities, police departments, Public Works Department (PWD), and fire departments, along with other departments, to ensure that all high-rise buildings, offices, hotels, and commercial establishments should be thoroughly inspected, and that fire safety systems should be in place, the report stated.
