A Guwahati court on Wednesday directed Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi to make no statement in connection with his allegations against Riniki Bhuyan Sarma—Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife—till the date of the next hearing in a defamation case she has filed against him.
Rinika Bhuyan Sarma is Chairman and Managing Director of Pride East Entertainments Private Ltd, one of the largest media companies in the Northeast, that owns two news channels, a newspaper, a digital news portal and multiple entertainment channels. On September 22, Sarma had filed a case against Gogoi in Guwahati, claiming Rs 10 crore in damages. This came after Gogoi alleged that her company received a grant of Rs 10 crore from the Centre using her husband’s influence.
On Wednesday, Sarma’s lawyer Devajit Saikia said she has denied receiving any subsidy. “In fact, she has received two show-cause notices for not submitting any applications to get subsidy. Even after getting two communications, neither she nor her company ever made any application seeking any subsidy,” he said.
