Project Sukanya,an initiative of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to save the girl child,will be launched on August 20.

Chief of the city unit of the IMA,Dr Ambarish Shahade said,“We have set up the Pre Conception and Pre- Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PC-PNDT ) cell at IMA and also submitted a proposal to the PMC for devising a software to check sex determination.

According to Dr Vaijayanti Patwardhan,in charge of the PC-PNDT cell of IMA ,the emphasis of the project will be on personal counselling and setting up a helpline. “We plan to interact with doctors to change their mindset as well as couples who seek ultrasound examination for sex determination.”

The F Form that requires the details of a pregnant woman needs to be filled properly and hence the IMA has submitted a proposal to the PMC to develop a software that will help doctors fill the form online.

The IMA has also sought details about the Kolhapur pattern of filling the form,said Patwardhan.
