Saffron gave way to green as Dewan of Moinuddin Chishti’s Durgah, Zain-ul-Abedin, tied green turbans around BJP’s top heads — Vajpayee and party chief Venkaiah Naidu.

Vajpayee and Finance Minister Jaswant Singh tried hard to blend Urdu words like janaab and izzat bakshi in their Hindi speeches.

Muslim leaders in turn made it a point to own up Sangh Parivar by referring to RSS leaders as ‘‘hamare K.S. Sudarshan sahib.’’

Naidu reeled off the names of Muslims on top in all fields — from President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to Maharashtra Governor Mohammad Fazal, Mohammad Azharuddin and Shahrukh Khan.

‘‘Even my father-in-law is named Mastnaiah, after a Pir,’’ said Naidu.
