8226; The unanimity with which our parliamentarians have joined together to sort out the issue of office of profit certainly shows that there is something more than meets the eye ‘When office is profit, profit is office’, March 26. Why are they clamouring for posts which pay them a pittance, on a ‘sitting by sitting’ basis? India has a population of a billion. Don’t we have enough professionals to head these organisations, councils and committees?

Madam Sonia, Our Lady of Perpetual Renunciation, has a forgiving nature—having forgiven Quattrrochi over the Bofors scam; having rehabilitated Ajit Jogi after he was caught red handed trying to bribe and buy newly elected lawmakers after having lost elections; and having accommodated several accused in financial scams and murders as ministers in her government.

Sudheendra Kulkarni does not mention why Atal Behari Vajpayee who, he says, is endowed with ‘‘sixth sense’’ in politics, could not prevent the NDA government’s defeat ‘Enjoyer of an office of super-profit’, March 26. Coming to the resignation issue of Sonia, it was comical to see the chest-beating people in front of her house screaming their throats off. Sonia is believed to have consulted only her son and daughter, who are still wet behind their ears in politics, before submitting her resignation, which is an insult to other leaders in the Congress.

Apart from a shameless display of sycophancy, Sonia Gandhi’s resignation has resulted in a bizarre profanation of noble terms like ‘‘sacrifice’’, ‘‘inner voice’’, ‘‘political morality’’, ‘‘martyrdom’’ etc. by those of our political class who hardly have moral scruples. Far from the inner voice of her conscience, Gandhi’s resignation is no more than a calculated strategy to suit her personal and the party’s convenience and interests.

Sometime back when our ‘‘honourable’’ MPs were caught on camera accepting money for asking questions sometimes for not asking! in the Lok Sabha, a well-rehearsed drama of appointing a committee, a report and their dismissal from the House was efficiently enacted to cheat the people. Why was the Income Tax Department not asked to investigate their financial affairs of the last 10 years? Why was there no stipulation that these MPs cannot enter the Lok Sabha in their lifetime?
