Gopi upsets World No 22
BANGALORE: Gopi Chand, Nikhil Kanetkar and Aparna Popat made it to the quarter finals of the 50,000 German Open badminton.
Aparna, ranked 26 in the world, played a marathon lasting 70 mintues to beat World No 34 Wan Tin Ling 7-11 11-7 13-12. She meets World no 10 Yasuko Mizui.Nikhil upset second seed Thomas Johannson, ranked 22 in the World, 15-3 4-15 15-9. Gopi upset 19th-ranked Xin Peng Ji of China 15-3 15-9.
FMSCI overhaul
CHENNAI: The Federation of Motor Sports Clubs in India FMSCI will be restructured to include different Indian automobile associations, according to Federation Internationale de Automobile FIA. FMSCI chairman Vijay Mallya said he was ready to restructure FMSCI with Nazir Hoosein head of Motor Sports Association of India and a FIA vice-president and Yuon Leon FIA’s special advisor on foreign affairs.
Swim meet put off
AHMEDABAD: The 54th Senior National aquatic championship, scheduled in Mumbai from October 26, has beenpostponed. The new date for the championship will be announced soon. The FINA diving judges clinic, to be held concurrently, has also been postponed.
Churchill must win
MARGAO: Vasco Sports Club scored twice in the first half to rout Mormugao Port Trust MPT 2-0 in the Director’s Special Professional football league today.
Jude Odegah 13th and Sukhdev Arwade 17th scored.
Vasco finished with 12 points and trail Churchill 12 from 7 and Salgaocar 13 from 8. Churchill must win against Dempo in the final match tomorrow to win the title.
