If you’re a creative professional and are keen to soak in some old world charm there’s a place for you. A heritage enclave in the old city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Arts Reverie ‘‘is a retreat space for creative professionals,’’ managed by arts manager and writer Anupa Mehta.

Set in a traditional pol, this enclosed neighbourhood with winding streets could help you get over that writer’s block. This is where women meet over evening tea and hearty gossip and where you can become part of the community as easily as a part of a conversation. Exquisitely designed chabootaras bird feeders at the tiny crossroads and cows and dogs ambling around add to the pol’s characteristic flavour.

The heritage house in Dhal ni pol that originally belonged to a Jain jeweller, combines modern day comforts, including a wire free environment, with forgotten charms. ‘‘The restoration of this building was carried out by the Ahmedabad Heritage Centre as part of the Indo-French Cooperation Project for revitalisation of Ahmedabad. While the original picturesque plaster adornments have been maintained, the interiors are contemporary interiors,’’ says Mehta.

While writers and artists closeted in castles and resorts abroad is old news, in India it doesn’t happen too often.

‘‘The idea to work on and start this place is about making this an interesting collaboration, about getting people here. Why must they go to Delhi or Mumbai? We want the creative fraternity to come and stay here in this environment where contemplating, thinking, being productive comes natural,’’ says Mehta.

This pol house will offer more than just bed and breakfast. It will also assist the guests in exploring art circuits across India. While the idea is to ‘‘perk up the art area of the city’’, Mehta maintains that ‘‘Ahmedabad has resources that need to be galvanised’’.

There are plans for the future too. ‘‘About six months later, we plan to offer a one-month fellowship where a person can stay here and in exchange conduct a performance for city enthusiasts,’’ she adds.
