Has HRD Minister Arjun Singh’s long-time trusted lieutenant and mastermind of the OBC quota law Sudeep Banerjee fallen out of favour? The former secretary, who retired in October last year, and was posted as “advisor” in the HRD Ministry will no longer enjoy the perks of being a Shastri Bhavan mandarin as his contract will not be renewed. The reason: he did nothing when the quota law was struck down by the Supreme Court. But Banerjee is looking forward to taking over as Vice-Chancellor of National University for Educational Planning and Administration and as honorary professor of Gandhian studies in Jamia Millia Islamia—enough for him to keep his official bungalow and car and other trappings of officialdom.
