Rain, magic from Jasprit Bumrah and Alex Carey’s half-century were the highlights of the first hour of the third Test match between Australia and India at the Gabba on Day 3 in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy.
Rain has played hide-and-seek on the third day at the Gabba. It has forced a delayed start, and players walked back twice inside the first hour of the play.
Australia were bowled out for 445 runs in their first innings.
Jasprit Bumrag gets his sixth wicket of the match as he dismissed overnight batter Mitchell Starc. It was a bit of a tame end for Starc, who nicked one behind and trudged off for 18.
Alex Carey slammed a fine 70. Carey reached his ninth Test fifty in just 53 deliveries. The southpaw played the shot of the day when he gave the charge at Indian seamer Akash Deep and clobbered a 108m six over long-off.
Carey put on a 22-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Nathan Lyon. Mohammed Siraj and Deep struck to wrap up Australia’s innings in 117.1 overs.
Akash Deep, who was lauded by centurion Steve Smith at the end of the second day of play finally opened his account. Carey hooked high into the leg side, and Shubman Gill took a good catch at deep wide long.
“I thought Akash bowled really nicely,” Smith told reporters on Sunday.
“Particularly that first spell. He was getting the ball to move with significant movement. He bowled a really good length and he’s a nice bowler. It was the first time I’d faced him.”
