Former England pacer Steve Harmison believes that with the men’s national team’s chances for a semifinal spot at the 2023 ODI World Cup all but gone, Ben Stokes should return back to England rather than featuring in the squad for the final two games against the Netherlands and Pakistan.
“I am amazed Ben is still in the country, I don’t see any point in him being there,” Harmison told PA. “I’m sure that conversation has been had but it needs strong leadership. It needs someone to say, ‘Ben, you’re going home. Here’s a ticket, there’s the plane, get on it’. I think Rob Key, as director of cricket, should probably take that decision and if I was (Test coach) Brendon McCullum I’d be doing everything I could to encourage him.” (READ MORE)

More pleased with the victory (than scoring a century), it has been a tough World Cup for us. It was a nice wicket to bat on, had some tennis-ball bounce. We (Woakes and himself) built a good partnership, whenever there was pressure building I had a look at the scoreboard and reminded myself there was a lot of time remaining (in the innings). Tried to take it deep and cash in later. He (Woakes) is a genuine all-rounder for us, he has been a great cricketer for England over the last 2-3 years and today he proved it.
Moeen Ali again and Nidamanuru takes a single off the first delivery. van Meekeren on strike and he's stumped. And just like that, it's over in the blink of an eye. England win by 160 runs.
Rashid again and Nidamanuru smashes him for a boundary to start this over off. Takes a single next to put Aryan Dutt on strike and Rashid has cleaned him up!!
Moeen will continue and Nidamanuru takes a single to star this one off. New man van der Merwe on strike now and he tries a reverse sweep and perishes. Rashid with the catch. NED go 8 down
Rashid in to bowl the next one and Nidamanuru can't get off the mark in this over. 3 back to back dots. Smashes the 4th but it's just short of the mid wicket boundary as he gets a single. AND gone again. van Beek goes for a sweep shot, gets it all wrong and Malan takes a simple catch.
Moeen Ali will bowl the next one and a huge shout for an LBW but England don't review. Looked pretty close though but Moeen wasn't convinced. And finally as Edwards tries a big shot and has holed out to Malan at mid off.
Back from drinks and Rashid is in the attack. England need a wicket now to break this partnership but Nidamanuru and Edwards are staying strong in the middle, dealing in singles and doubles. 6 from this over.
Moeen Ali back in the attack and starts with back to back dots. Nidamanuru takes a single off the third and Edwards is on strike. The skipper returns the favour with a single of his own. Nidamanuru follows that up with a six to long off. Beautifully struck. 8 off this one as well.
Atkinson to bowl the 31st over and starts with back to back dots as Edwards defends. Smashes the 3rd to pierce through mid on and get a boundary. Pulls again and this time it passes through backward square leg for four more. Good over for the Dutch. 8 off it.
Rashid will continue and Edwards sweeps but gets no run from the first 2 balls as the fielders are perfectly placed. Gets hit on the helmet and the physio will comecheck Edwards out even though the NED captain says that he is fine. 3 from the over.
Atkinson to bowl the next over and Nidamanuru hits a six to start this one off. Gets an edge next and takes a single. 8 runs ultimately from this over.
Rashid in the attack now and Edwards mines 2 from his first delivery before going off strike with a single. Nidamanuru has hit the next ball striaght up and that has gone over the ropes for a six!! 10 from the over.
Gus Atkinson back in the attack and starts with 2 leg byes as a fumble from Stokes gives away the extra run. Ufff. That's a dropped carch as Willey runs backward but the ball bounces off his fingers. Nidamanuru survives. 4 from this one
Rashid to bowl the 26th over and edwards takes a single to bring up NED's 100. Bas de Leede on strike and he cuts the second delivery for a four to third man. And he's gone the next ball. Goes through the batter and it all ends up as the outside edge plays a huge part.
Willey continues and de Leede has pulled the first one for a boundary. That will give them a whole lot of confidence. 6 from the over ultimately.
Adil Rashid will continue and Edwards takes a single to start this one off. Follows that up with and wide before Bas de Leede takes another single to retain strike. 3 from this one.
Willey back in the attack and he has given England the breakthrough. Engelbrecht tries a big shot but could not clear mid on! Woakes takes the catch and NED lose 4th wicket.
Rashid introduced in the attack next and Edwards takes a single to start. Another single by Engelbrecht and Edwards with a four after coming back in strike. Huge shout for an LBW but the umpire isn't interested. 7 from this over.
Wokaes in to bowl the 21st and he starts with a dor before negating it with a wide. Engelbrecht tries to swap at the 2nd and it just misses the outer edge. He finally gets a good bat to the 4th ball and a boundary. Should have been saved though but Atkinson is a bit sloppy.
Moeen Ali to bowl the next over and Edwards with a single off the first 2 balls. NED need to get a move on here. Their run rate at the moment is 3.40 while they need 8.75. The singles won't do at the moment. Just 4 from this one.
Woakes back in the attack and Edwards goes off strike with a single. Engelbrecht on strike and he leaves the next ball before defending the 3rd. Just 3 from this one.
We are back from the drinks break and England have struck as Barresi is run out. That's NED's 10th run out in this tournament. The running between wickets and the communication between batters have left a lot to be desired.
Gus Atkinson will continue and gives away 1 from the first 3 balls. England now claim for a catch. Engelbrecht was walking but the umpires ask him to wait. Looks like the ball has dropped but the third umpire wants another angle. Looks very, very close. And it's been given not out. The batter pulls the next one for a huge six to rub more salt on the English wounds. 7 from the over.
Moeen Ali will bowl his 3rd over and England's 16th. After 2 dots, Barresi takes a single to put Engelbrecht on strike. Just that single from this one.
Atkinson to bowl the next over and Barresi with a boundary to start this one off. He is not hanging about anymore. Just 5 from this over though.
Moeen Ali to bowl the next and there's an umpire's review for run out but looks like the batter was safely in. Yes, the dive saved him. The fourth is hit for a massive six by Barresi, followed by a four as 50 is up for NED.
Atkinson will continue but before that he has to take off what looks like tape from his finger. Starts with 2 singles off the first two deliveries as the NED batters rotate strikes. Another 2 off the fifth ball and a single to end. 6 off the over.
Moeen Ali in the attack and now the NED batters are finding some runs to keep the scoreboard ticking. Just 4 from this over ultimately as England keep the pressure on NED.
Gus Atkinson introduced in the attack now and after giving away 1 from the first 3 balls, Engelbrecht gets a mistimed shot tha sends it over long on for a boundary. 5 from this one.
Willey steams in to bowl the last over inside the first powerplay and starts with back to back dots. He went for a pull in the 3rd deliver, gets the bottom edge and the fielder near mid on saves a run. Gets an edge next and takes a single to get off the mark. 1 from this one as well.
Woakes to bowl the penultimate over of the first powerplay and NED are still stuck at 21/2 after the first 4 deliveries with the variations getting to Barresi. Finally takes a single off the last delivery, does Barresi, his first run in 14 balls. 1 from the over.
Willey to bowl the 8th and Engelbrecht defends to start this one off. The next couple of deliveries are dots as well as the batter struggles to get off the mark. Nothing off this over as it ends as a maiden.
Woakes will continue and beats the bat again with the first delivery. He looks unplayable at the moment, under the lights. Back to back dots follow as Barresi is cautious. He takes 2 next and the over ends with a dot. 2 from this over.
Willey in to bowl the next over and starts with a dot as Barresi defends. The next one, he opens up his arms for a stroke but it goes to a fielder. Takes a quick single now and Ackermann on strike. And he's gone!!! Absolute jaffa as the NED batter gets a faint edge and Buttler takes the catch.
Woakes to bowl the 5th and ODowd flicks it for a boundary to start this one off. Two dots follow and the next one gets O Dowd who flicks it straight to Moeen Ali at mid-on. NED lose 1st wicket.
Willey in the attack again and starts with two dots as Barresi defends. Gets the bat to the 3rd ball which was going past his leg and the ball has raced to the boundary. Yorker next and he defends resolutely and follows up with another one. 4 from this one.
Woakes to bowl the 3rd and ODowd tries a stroke but a fielder in the circle is equal to it. Ufff!! the 3rd cuts him in half as it makes its way to the keeper. Same result next ball as it goes througfh the batter once again. Siper bowling. Gets a leading edge next and survives with a single. 2 from the over.
Willey in to bowl the second over and Barresi defends the first two balls. Same for the next delivery as the NED batter struggles to get off the mark in this over. Maiden over.
A change in the top order for NED as Barresi and ODowd have come out for the run chase. Woakes will start and he appeals for a caght behind off the 4th delivery. Buttler wasn't convinced but Root and Woakes convinced him to take the review. Nothing doing and the ball misses the bat as England lose an early review. Barresi gets a thick edge next and Root has dropped him!! Just 2 from this over.
It has been Ben Stokes' innings which has taken England to that massive total. They had been looking for this sort of spark throughout the tournament however, it came right at the end. The Dutch have conceded 124 runs in the final 10 overs which might have effectively cost them the game. It is a lot of runs to get but the English bowling has been not up to the mark either in this tournament and these are still excellent conditions to bat on. If there is be influence of dew Netherlands can give it a shot. However, having said all that these still are lot of runs to get.
Well, plenty has happened in the last 10 minutes for starters Ben Stokes scored his first World Cup 100 and Chris Woakes maned to complete his 50 as well. Then Bas De Leede bowled a pretty average over in the middle of it he somehow managed to pick a couple of wickets of Woakes and Willey as both the batters had been trying to get a few runs. Also Netherlands have been behind the over rate hence they will be having only four fielders outside the circle for the final over.
The Dutch wheels are coming off now. They are giving away a lot of runs here at the death. More importantly, they are missing their lines and lengths and are ending up bowling a lot of wides. They have to be extremely careful. When they were in a similar situation against Glenn Maxwell in Delhi they ended up conceding the fastest ton by a batter. Stokes in this kind of situations is extremely dangerous as we have seen before. Even Woakes in now looking to play a few more shots then he did when he came on early on his innings.
Ben Stokes has changed gears here. He smacked one boundary through covers and followed it up with a six on the leg side. Then he tried to reverse sweep a ball which hit his pads and the Dutch players appealed. However, the umpire did not give it out and the decision was sent upstairs there was a spike on the ultra edge indicating there was a bat involved. The Dutch have to be careful now the longer Stokes stays in the middle bigger this score will get.
We have entered the final 10 of the innings and England will be looking to get themselves to 300. Chris Woakes is another batter who has got himself a start here and he will be hoping to stick with Ben Stokes till the end. One area where the Netherlands has struggled throughout the tournament is death bowling when they have to bowl to players who are set. Of course, one would say it is a problem for every team but the Dutch bowlers just don't seem to have the skill level of some of the other sides to contain batters at the end.

Moeen tried to rotate strike for a bit and then suddenly out of the blue decided that he was going to go down the ground and could not get any timing on the ball and ended up chipping it too long on. Another wicket falls for England. Another batter who seemed like he did not know what tempo to bat or how to approach the innings. Chris Woakes has walked into the middle and he needs to build a partnership with Ben Stokes. It seems like a lot of work needs to be done on this batting unit at the moment more than the bowling.
The second phase of this game has gone to the Netherlands. They have made a roaring comeback into the game and got themselves into a position where they can restrict England to a sub-par total and later chase them down as well. The way the clouds are all over the ground we might even have some rain interruptions in the second innings when DLS might come into play. England needs to build a partnership here a big one. Ben Stokes needs to bat through the overs if England needs to get some total on the board that they can defend.
van Meekeren in to bowl the next one and he has struck!! Nidamanuru takes a sinple catch and the England skipper shakes his head and makes his way back to the pavillion.
Ackermann in to bowl the 30th over and yields 2 runs from the first 3 deliveries as the England batters deal in singles in this over. Just 4 from the over.
On to the 29th over and Bas de Leede has the ball in his hands. Stokes and Buttlewr roate strike in the first 2 balls before Stokes smashes a boundary off the 4th delivery. 7 from the over.
Another one goes down for England it was Harry Brook this time who tried to pull a short one and was caught by the fine-leg Ackerman. The Dutch are quietly chipping in with wickets for the last 15-20 minutes. England needs to be careful here this innings is starting to stutter a bit now. When Malan and Root were playing it looked like England would get over 300 with ease however now it seems like a bit of Deja Vu of their terrible batting performances in recent times. Jos Buttler has walked into the middle and Ben Stokes is on the other hand this is arguably the most experienced pairing in this lineup and they need to build a partnership here.
Defending champions England after their four games in the tournament have been lingering bottom on the table in the ongoing World Cup campaign. While the format of the World Cup is such that it allows for quality sides to make a comeback into the tournament late in the piece, the 229-run defeat on Saturday against South Africa begs the question if there is a hope of a comeback for this side and also an even bigger question looms which is if it this is a quality ODI side at all? Or Just a bunch of T20 players hoping to make things click?
Eoin Morgan during his tenure emphasized playing attacking brand cricket but never did he start giving players extended runs in ODI cricket on their T20 merits. And also there was never a tendency to treat ODI like an extended T20I. The side knew how to approach different phases of the game and played sensibly when they had to. The final of 2019 was one of those classic instances where England played the game on its merit. However, under Jos Buttler, it looks like a team in an identity crisis and not knowing how to approach format in all departments. (Read more from Tanishq Vaddi)
Not long after Root has walked back David Malan throws his wicket away. He tapped the ball onto the off-side and looked to sneak a single, however, Stokes realised there was no single there and sent the batter back. Malan did dive but fell short of the crease as the fielder at point released the ball quickly. Massive wicket for the Netherlands as Malan was looking good for a massive ton today however not to be so. Brook has walked into the middle and alongside Stokes needs to build a partnership here. The Dutch can now get through a few tight overs and put some pressure back on England again.
Joe Root tried to switch hit Van Beek and the ball went through his legs and cleaned the stumps. This dismissal sums up the kind of tournament Root had. It is a shot he has been playing off-late a lot however, this time it seemed like he was in two minds and got himself bowled. One may even question the necessity of that shot in this stage of the game with getting runs overs 6.5s every over to win the 20th over the game. This has been the problem with England they have been struggling to find the right tempo throughout the tournament and Root's dismissal embodies the entire team's performance this tournament.
We are just done with the water break and it has been England all over the Netherlands. They need a wicket here. The Dutch captain Scott Edwards is bringing in the changes but the batters seem to be not in sort of trouble against them. Malan's batting tempo today has been top-notch notch something for the other England batters to learn from. He started all guns blazing in the powerplay and once done he is rotating the strike nicely and punishing which is loose. He is looking for a big ton today the way things are going at the moment.

Bas De Leede's slower ones seem to be sticking to the surface at the moment. Maybe we might see the ball playing a few more tricks once it gets older. Van Meekeren on the other end is keeping things tight at the moment. Another nice partnership is brewing between Joe Root and Dawid Malan and they will be hoping to make it big. Root needs 54 runs to complete 1000 runs in the cricket World Cup. As per the Netherlands, they need to stop giving away easy singles which they are giving at the moment and build pressure.
