IND vs AFG 2nd ODI Playing XI Updates
It’s been almost a year since he has taken up the ODI job and Shubman Gill will finally have the chance to earn his first series win as captain this evening.
As clinical as it gets, India’s return to the ODI format, albeit in half the time in a curtailed 25-over game in Dharamsala was polished by Gill’s mature batting in a 195-run chase. The captain is fast becoming India’s batting heard and mind in the longer formats. While he carved a century in the one-off Test, Gill returned an unbeaten 84 to seal a largely spotless chase three nights ago.

Rashid Khan returns
Kharoti to Iyer, OUT! A floater on the pads and Iyer miscues the slog towards long-on. A good catch in the deep and India cede a string of wickets towards the end. Gurnoor Brar is in at 8.
Shreyas Iyer c Ibrahim Zadran b Nangeyalia Kharote 26 (24b 1x4 1x6)
The run flow doesn't stop despite a couple of wicket as Iyer smears another wide delivery through backward point for FOUR. Eight from the over.
IND 369/5 in 44 overs
Kharoti to Gill, OUT! A tame end for a superlative knock. Gill attempts a reverse-sweep and gets a top-edge to the field. KL Rahul greets Gill as he exits the field. Kharoti to KL Rahul, OUT! A first ball duck. Rahul lofts first ball but miscues the hit straight to wide long-on.
Shubman Gill c Darwish Rasooli b Nangeyalia Kharote 154 (110b 22x4 2x6); KL Rahul c Ibrahim Zadran b Nangeyalia Kharote 0 (1b)
150 up for Shubman Gill as he converts his maiden ton as captain to a daddy century. He's hardly looked flustered throughout this innings, either by the opposition attack or the heat.
IND 353/3 in 42 overs
Gill continues his onslaught with a beautiful lofted extra cover drive for FOUR. A couple of singles follow as the captain moves closer to 150. No reprieve for Kharoti as Gill and Iyer exchange strike easily with a diet of singles.
IND 336/3 in 39 overs
An appeal for a stumping as Gill attempts a swipe across the line but misses it altogether. Gill's cramped up considerably and falls flat in pain. Meanwhile, the reviews clear him to stay. The back leg is placed firmly in the crease. The physio continues to rub his hamstring and Gill's back up on his feet straightaway.
IND 328/3 in 38 overs
One-hander from Kishan. Kishan scythes Kharoti with another mighty SIX over mid-wicket for SIX and he backs it up with another SIX. He goes for a third and gone, Kishan holes out to the deep mid-wicket fielder.
Ishan Kishan c sub (Ikram Alikhil) b Nangeyalia Kharote 125 (79b 14x4 7x6)
The Afghans have turned hapless now as Kishan pumps the first ball of the over for a SIX over long-on. A single to follow and Gill turns another one around his pads for FOUR. High full-toss and Gill flicks it down fine leg for FOUR. And it's a no-ball! Misery and more misery for Afghanistan as India waltz towards 300 with Gill and Kishan going at it in full swing.
IND 294/2 in 35 overs
India are going all out after the drinks break. Gill continues to unfurl boundaries at a manic rate as 10 runs come off the Sami over. Afghanistan have been taken apart on all accounts this evening. With 16 overs to go, can India target 400 from here?
IND 276/2 in 34 overs
There it is, a maiden ODI hundred as captain for Shubman Gill. He reaches his century in only 76 deliveries. Another FOUR down leg and Gill follows up with a single. Ishan Kishan joins him on the milestone hunt with a hat-trick of FOURs to reach his second ODI ton. It's his first in five years since slamming a 210 in Bangladesh in December 2022. What a comeback season has this been for him.
Kishan's storming towards his century as he takes down Rashid Khan on either side of the wicket with three boundaries - 4, 6 and 4.
Wow, this is some hitting and Rashid Khan walks off at the end of the over. He's limping and has perhaps done some damage to his knee.
IND 245/2 in 39 overs
A couple of singles to start the over. Gill moves to 98 with another firm push down to long-off. He's in no hurry whatsoever. Kishan stands in sharp contrast and cracks another short ball over mid-wicket for FOUR. He's speeding towards his century, too! A single to end the over.
IND 229/2 in 31 overs
Hashmat continues and there comes another wafter on length. Kishan takes care of it beautifully, swivelling and hammering it through mid-wicket for FOUR. Tossed up outside the off-stump and Kishan gracefully lifts it over extra cover for SIX! He goes again, this time a lot squarer. One bounce and he fetches FOUR runs.
IND 220/2 in 30 overs
Gill moves into the 90s as Ghazanfar returns to the attack with a loosener that the Indian captain dragged to wide long-on. Another one on the full and Gill goes in the diametrically opposite direction this time and a mis-field at wide long-on hands him another FOUR. A single to follow and Kishan joins in on the act, biffing another ball down the ground for FOUR.
IND 205/2 in 29 overs
Half-century in 51 balls for Ishan Kishan. He's got there without breaking a sweat, his first half-century in nearly three years, as Shahidi drops one short, enough for Kishan to slap the ball across through wide long-on for FOUR.
IND 193/2 in 28 overs
No inroads whatsoever for Afghanistan as Gill and Kishan have remained rock solid. The seamers have looked toothless with spin, barring Rashid, looking ineffective too on a hot day.
IND 186/2 in 27 overs
Another short ball gets the treatment. Cross-seamer from Bilal Sami and Kishan rocks back to hammer it over square-leg for another SIX. A loosener on length and Kishan flicks it down leg for another FOUR this time. This is just ordinary bowling from the seamers all day today. A single follows. A Kohli-esque off-drive from Gill to close the over as Sami errs with another wafter.
IND 168/2 in 23 overs
The 150 up comes for India shortly after Shahidi brings himself onto the attack. He tosses one up on the full and Kishan pummels the ball back down the ground for FOUR.
IND 153/2 in 22 overs
Saleem slides one short and Kishan quickly tucks it over fine leg for SIX! A maximum after quite a break and Kishan's latched into such lengths all season. Another short delivery and Gill hacks it across to mid-wicket for a single.
Saleem continues to err on width and Gill flays another ball through point for FOUR. The pacers have erred quite a few times on length this afternoon. Another short ball and Gill merely jabs through wide mid-on. Standing upright, with the hands just angling across the line for another FOUR. Direct-hit at the non-striker's as Gill sets off on a single with a tap to mid-on. He's home eassily and nine runs come off the over.
IND 131/2 in 19 overs
In the slot from Kharoti and Gill nimbly rocks back and pulls it flat over wide long-on for SIX, a half-century in 38 balls for the Indian captain. He's got a sweat towel around his neck, shows how hot it's been in Lucknow today.
IND 119/2 in 16 overs
100 up for India as Kishan and Gill attempt to rebuild. A decent hase here for Afghanistan to seize momentum, riding on the lengths and spin from Rashid.
IND 102/2 in 15 overs
Rashid to Rohit, OUT!
Cleaned him up. Rashid castles Rohit with a cracking leg-break, taking the inside-edge back onto the stumps. He misses out on a well-deserved half-century but credit to another pearler from Rashid there to outdo the former captain. Ishan Kishan is in at 4.
Rohit Sharma b Rashid Khan 48 (39b 6x4 2x6)
A neat bed of singles from Gill and Rohit to stifle Kharoti. The line tapers off and Gill slices the fifth ball through backward point for FOUR.
IND 96/1 in 13 overs
Rashid Khan is into the attack
Rohit continues to employ a solid block as Rashid slides the ball into the stumps. A single follows and Gill backs it up with a drive to long-off for one run. Slower through the air and Rashid nearly foxes Rohit this time, the leading edge just falling short of cover.
IND 88/1 in 12 overs
Sami offers a touch of width and Rohit taps it gently through short-third, a misfield sends the ball rolling down for FOUR. And Rohit closes the Powerplay in style, with a nonchalant loft from the slot over mid-on for another FOUR. He's back in his rhythm and how.
IND 80/1 in 10 overs
Nangeyalia Kharoti into the attack
A dreadful start from Kharoti as he sends out a booming full-toss down leg and Gill duly pulls it over backward square for SIX. No quiet overs so far after the first as Gill and Rohit reel in eight from this one.
IND 72/1 in 9 overs
Too easy for Rohit. After smashing Ghazanfar through covers in the previous over, Rohit simply rolls his wrists through the on-side to flick Sami through mid-wicket for FOUR. Sami errs with another overpitched delivery outside off-stump and Rohit kneels into the delivery and creams it through point for another FOUR.
IND 64/1 in 8 overs
Bilal Sami into the attack
Short from Sami and Rohit mistimes the pull this time, and it falls just over the mid-off fielder. He reels in two runs and steers the next down to third for a single. Width again and Gill cuts it through point for another FOUR.
IND 49/1 in 7 overs
Gill is in sublime command. Ghazanfar tosses the ball up twice in the slot and Gill absolutely pulverises the line with back-to-back FOURs through the off-side. A couple of singles to follow and Gill smears another FOUR to close the over.
IND 42/1 in 5 overs
Short from Saleem and Rohit swivels gloriously on the front-foot and smacks it for SIX over mid-wicket. Shorter and higher this time, Rohit raises the SIX higher over square leg this time. Rohit becomes the 5th Indian to complete 14,000 List A runs.
IND 28/1 in 4 overs
Ghazanfar continues to induce late swing into Gill who defends neatly. A touch overpitched and Gill opens his account with an imperious off-drive for FOUR. A single follows, Gill drives one to long-on.
IND 15/1 in 3 overs
Mohammed Saleem into the attack
Short and wide and Rohit Sharma opens his account with a gentle slap through point for FOUR. A leg bye to follow. Loose again from Saleem and Jaiswal smears it through extra cover for FOUR.
Saleem to Jaiswal, OUT! Straight to the fielder. He must be kicking himself with that dismissal. Another one on width and Jaiswal slaps it straight to the backward point fielder. Shubman Gill walks in at 3.
Yashasvi Jaiswal c Nangeyalia Kharote b Mohammad Saleem 4 (9b 1x4)
A swinging slider from Ghazanfar as Jaiswal digs out the first ball to cover. Straighter this time and Jaiswal taps it back to the bowler. Three dots on the trot as Ghazanfar wafts one slower through the air and Jaiswal hangs back to defend. A maiden to start.
IND 0/0 in 1 over
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma walk out to open the innings. So captain Shubman Gill indeed slides down to No. 3 for the sake of his side. Jaiswal takes guard. He's coming off a century in his last one-dayer against South Africa last November. Afghanistan begin with spin in the sapping heat. Allah Ghazanfar takes the new ball.
India opener Rohit Sharma surpasses Rahul Dravid for the fourth-most appearances by an Indian across formats with his 510th match today. Both have had identical international runs (12446) after turning 30 before this innings.
Most appearances by an Indian across formats
664 - Sachin Tendulkar
559 - Virat Kohli
538 - MS Dhoni
510* - Rohit
Who will it be that will pair up with Rohit Sharma this afternoon? Will the captain slide down to No. 3 in the absence of Virat Kohli or will Yashasvi Jaiswal simply fill in at number three? Either way, there's a lot to prove for both Rohit and Jaiswal today.

TOSS: Afghanistan win toss, opt to bowl
Gill: We would have bowled first as well. It's all about being in difficult situations and getting that experience. Three changes. Prince makes his debut. We've got Kuldeep and Jaiswal in.
Shahidi: We want to bowl first. Wicket looks fresh. I think it'll be spinning in the first innings. In the last game, we played really well, we missed the partnerships. We had one partnership and then threw away our wickets. Hopefully we come back stronger. Our boys have a lot of passion of cricket. We have three changes. Nabi is sick, Azmat got injured and Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi isn't playing. Bilal, Darwish Rasooli and one more.
Shubman Gill and Hashmatullah Shahidi in the middle for the coin flip.
Our correspondent Tushar Bhaduri pings from Lucknow: "With five minutes to go for the toss, the stands look sparsely crowded. Could be due to the heat. The conditions have prompted a change in Playing Conditions. There will now be three drinks breaks during the first innings - at 2.30 pm, 3.30 pm and 4.30pm
A ban for age-fraud, a tennis to leather-ball transition at 18. A tough path to the IPL. A dream second season. A wonder ball to Virat Kohli followed by an ODI and T20I call-up. A dream that he had instilled in himself is finally coming to fruition in Lucknow, the city of his IPL franchise. Here's Lalith Kalidas tracing Prince Yadav's journey to Team India
A debut cap has been handed out to Prince Yadav, the sprightly seamer from Delhi who lit up the IPL with the Lucknow Super Giants. What a journey has it been for the man from a quaint village near Najafgarh in the capital.
Despite the critics sharpening over his future in the ODI side, India's spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule has backed Rohit Sharma as a vital cog in the ODI wheel in the months ahead.
"Rohit Sharma is an experienced player, he is a champion cricketer. He is somebody who adds value to this team with his experience not only batting wise but his leadership qualities also rubs off on to all the boys with Shubman (Gill) also," Bahutule told reporters in Lucknow.
"Him being in this side is definitely very, very important and he is somebody who understands each game, who understands what is expected from him and from the team.
"I think he is just been looking forward to every match and all the work he is putting in is like he has just started playing," he added.
Shubman Gill's command in the one-day format continues to grow. It maybe a pity that India do not play enough 50-over games these days that Gill may not eventually be able to raise his run-scoring tally to legendary levels even if he may possess the gifts needed to reach there. During the first ODI, Gill romped past 3000 runs in the format in only his 62nd innings. It is only bettered by South Africa legend Hashim Amla in ODI history, with Gill bettering the Indian record previously held by Shikhar Dhawan by 10 innings.
India probable XI: Shubman Gill (c), Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan (wk), Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harsh Dubey, Gurnoor Brar, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna.
Afghanistan probable XI: Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Sediqullah Atal, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Mohammad Saleem Safi, AM Ghazanfar, Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi
Rohit Sharma was from his glorious touch on a rainy evening in Dharamsala. When the skies had cleared up and India were tasked with a 195-run chase in his first India game in five months, Rohit was left wringing his hand in pain with the first ball that was angled towards him after two wides and a no-ball. He was hurried by the bouncer from Azmatullah Omarzai. He would go on to pull the ball again, albeit with poor timing, clear the fence. Rohit was slowly finding his feet before a mix-up with Shubman Gill ended in a run-out.
He looked far from the animated man he could be, or rather was during his captaincy tenure, on the field earlier in the night. Standing in unusual pockets at backward point and long-on, Rohit cut a lone figure through the evening. With questions hanging over his future on the road to the 2027 World Cup, it is only apt for the 39-year-old that he brings up his A-game in Lucknow to quell the detractors, or rather risk facing loud music ahead of the final game in Chennai.
India Squad: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill(c), Ishan Kishan(w), Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harsh Dubey, Gurnoor Brar, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prince Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav.
Afghanistan Squad: Rahmanullah Gurbaz(w), Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi(c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, AM Ghazanfar, Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi, Mohammad Saleem Safi, Fareed Ahmad Malik, Ikram Alikhil, Darwish Rasooli, Bilal Sami, Nangeyalia Kharoti
Welcome to the live coverage of the second ODI between India and Afghanistan. It's an action-packed day in the world of sports but one eye will remain on the cricketing action in Lucknow nevertheless. The spotlight will be reserved on former skipper Rohit Sharma at a venue where he played one of the all-time great World Cup knocks three years ago.
Big shoes to fill
The left-arm spin box is dazzling with options for India these days, with a bunch of wily spinners ready to take on the mantle from India's premier spin all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. However, spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule believes that Manav Suthar, Harsh Dubey and the others in contention have huge shoes to fill. READ MORE
