Soon after Rahul Dravid came on board as Indiaโs head coach, he made a case for changing their white-ball template, especially in the ODIs. Despite enjoying favourable results in bilateral ODIs, in successive World Cups, Down Under and in the UK, Indiaโs old-school approach of preserving wickets for the later half of the innings was found too outdated. With all the resources they had, it appeared they were batting with a hand-break on, shifting to the fifth gear only in the last 10 overs. They posted big totals, in excess of 300, but still appeared to have left some runs behind because of their cautious approach at the start.
Even as recently as the last T20 World Cup, they seldom seemed to come out of the shell. But since then, there has been a total shift in their approach. After showing glimpses of their template in the lead-up whenever a fully-fit side was available, this World Cup India have been on an encore. (Read more)

After nearly a decade, Virat Kohli got a wicket in the ODIs. The wrong-footed in-swinging menace as coach Rahul Dravid once described him, he is a reluctant bowler these days, unlike in his age-group cricket days when he was considered a batting all-rounder. The wicket, though, came in the most flukiest fashion. The ball seemed to slip off his hands, landed short and outside the leg-stump of Scott Edwards, who tried to glide the ball leg-side. All he managed was a tickle that the anticipating wicket-keeper KL Rahul clung on smartly. Kohli could not believe that such a horrendous ball, to put it mildly, earned him a wicket. Nonetheless, he joyously celebrated. Edwards, though, joined an illustrious list that includes Brendon McCullum, Quinton de Kock and Alastair Cook, apart from Craig Kieswetter. (Sandip G)
Bumrah will continue and Engelbrecht has hit hit into the sky, Siraj coming under it and he misjudges it and it lands safely. Not having the best day on field is Siraj. And Bumrah ends the over with a yorker as Bas de Leede is knocked over!!
Gill again and Bas de Leede as well as Engelbrecht take 2 runs off the first 3 deliveries. Jusr 4 off this over ultimately as India is well and truly on top.
Bumrah is back in the attack now and Bas de Leede swings and misses the first ball. Gets a bat to the second and takes a single. The crowd cheers as the big screen shows Rohit Sharma bowling in the net session as they push him to bowl as well. Just a single from this over.
And now Shubman Gill has been handed the ball. Everything is happening here. The first two balls yield 2 runs. Bas de Leede smashes the fourth ball past the cover fielder for 4. 7 from the over.
Jadeja will bowl the next over and Bas de Leede on strike. Takes a single off the second delivery while next couple of deliveries yield 3 more.
Kohli will continue and gives away 3 from the first 3 balls as the crowd is cheering his every delivery!! Kohli is loving it. 5 from the over ultimately.
Jadeja in to bowl the next and Engelbrecht starts with a four before he is dropped at slips by Rohit Sharma. Was travelling pretty fast and Rohit could not get his fingers around it. Engelbrecht rubs salt into the wounds with a four off the 5th before ending it with a dot.
Kohli continues and he has got a wicket as the crowd goes ballistic!!! Was going leg side, Edwards gets a slight edge and Rahul with the catch!!!
Jadeja continues from the other end and after a dot, there's 4 leg byes as NED reach 100. The next ball is played fine by Edwards as he brings out the sweep for 4!! Not the ideal line by Jadeja.
And what do you know? Virat Kohli has been handed the ball!! The crowd is going nuts. Ufff!!! Gets an edge off the last ball that goes for a four in behind the keeper. Very unlucky.
Jadeja in to bowl the next over and Edwards takes a single off the second delivery. Nothing off the next two balls as the bowler keeps it tight. Just the 1 from this over.

Kuldeep will bowl the next over and gives away just 1 from the first 4 deliveries as the NED players are cautious. Engelbrecht loses patience and goes for a heave ho but gets an edge and survives. Pulls the last ball for a four though.
Jadeja introduced in the attack and he has cleaned ODowd up in the very first delivery. Flat and it's gone through the batter. 3rd wicket gone.
Kuldeep will continue and Engelbrecht takes a single to go off strike. Oh my word!! ODowd has hit this high into the night sky and Siraj has dropped him near the long on boundary. Kuldeep has a sheepish expression on his face, does not look pleased at all,

Siraj continues and Ackermann off the mark with a single. ODowd back on strike and he smashes Siraj for a boundary through extra cover. 6 from the over.
Bumrah in to bowl the next over and starts with 3 back to back dots as ODowd struggles to ger off the mark. Stays that way as Bumrah snares a maiden.
Siraj in to bowl the second over and after starting with 2 dots, he strikes off the 3rd!! Outswinger and Barresi edges it straight to KL Rahul. The catch is being checked now and it looks like it's clean. Netherlands lose a review.
We are back for the chase and Barresi and Max ODowd will open for Netherlands. Bumrah with the new ball. And Barresi off the mark straight away with a single. ODowd returns the favour with Barresi driving the fifth towards point for 3. 5 from the over.
The shot of the India-Netherlands match came in the 44th over from KL Rahul. Van Meekeran had hurled it pretty full and in the middle and leg, hoping perhaps to cramp him for room, but Rahul didnโt budge an inch. No foot movement, nothing, for even a tiny forward move would have got him a lot closer to the ball, yorking himself. There was no time to move back, anyways.
A younger KL would have probably just played the conventional flick, but the IPL version of KL doesnโt do simple stuff like that. Instead, he flexed his knee, held balance and triggering power, and just let his hands do the job: it was a wondrous swish, his own version of the helicopter shot that he has often played in the IPL in the last few years.
His old Ranji team-mate and close friend David Mathais had once told how it all came out. (Read more from Sriram Veera here)

KL Rahul: Not gotten a lot of time (in the middle) in the last two games, so it was nice to get some time today. Batting at 5, it's important to get that confidence, it was a good knock. Getting that confidence to hit sixes towards the end was important. It's not rocket science, got to go hard in the last 10 overs. Tried to get as many runs as possible, that was the plan, the ball gets softer, so hitting sixes at the back end becomes difficult. It's just not this game, everyone has a clear game plan, we have been executing it (our plans) pretty well. Need to win this game and look forward to the semis. It (keeping) gets difficult sometimes, but I enjoy being involved in the game, the bowlers have challenged me during DRS calls, but they don't give me enough credit (on DRS calls).
KL Rahul takes to the skies. Consecutive sixes and he brings up a second hundred at the ODI World Cups - this one, the fastest century by an Indian in the history of the competition. Tries to add to it but is holed at deep mid wicket. What a fine effort from him, what a fine display from the Indian batting lineup. 410/4 on the scoreboard at the end of the 50 overs.
Still some time to the sunset but some fireworks taking place at the Chinnaswamy on the Diwali eve. Shreyas Iyer smacks Logan van Beek for three sixes in the 49th over. Nothing's worked for the Netherlands in the innings. KL Rahul envelops the over with another bounday and goes to 89. 25 staggering runs come from the over. India, 393/3 after 49 overs.
Paul van Meekeren goes slow and onto Rahul's pads, the latter clips it fine for four and inches close to what will be his second century at the ODI World Cups and a first at this edition. Can he get there? Can India get to 400? 32 runs away, 12 balls remaining to do so.
KL RAHUL, MY GOODNESS!
Another supreme shot off his willow. Those wrists coming into play again as van Beek dishes a fuller delivery outside the off stump and Rahul slices it over the backward point for six. My my. How can a shot so elegant, sound so fierce? He'd followed this one off a lofted shot down the ground off the previous delivery and now marches into the 80s.
That range again from KL Rahul. Behind square on the off side. Targets that region off a slower, short ball from Bas de Leede. Chops it rather than fashioning that orthodox cut shot he has in his arsenal. What a flex to do both so effieciently as a player.
Later in the over, Shreyas Iyer brings up his maiden ODI World Cup hundred. Richly deserved to add to his two big fifties against Sri Lanka and South Africa. 346/3 after 46 overs.
The boundaries continue to pour in. It's a short ball from Logan van Beek and Rahul stands tall before waltzing a late cut shot past the fielder at point for four runs. Seven runs pocketed from that over. He's been timing it so well today. 337/3 after 45 overs.
Paul van Meekeren leaks big. 18 runs come from the 44th over. A six each from Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul - the second, perhaps the shot of the tournament. Full and onto his pads and Rahul brings the bottom hand into play to whip it over deep backward square for six. A no ball there as well to add the extra run.
Fifty up for KL Rahul. Fifth batter out for India at the Chinnaswamy today, and fifth to get a fifty. It's happened for the first time in the history of ODI World Cup.
Shreyas Iyer on the other end, moving close to a first World Cup century. Clips one down short fine off van Beek for four.
100 runs partnership up between KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. The latter brings it up with a hammer of a shot off a bouncer down long on for four. 300 comes up for India. 304/3 after 42 overs as Rahul also inches closer to his fifty.
Logan van Beek back into the attack. The first one is a slower, length ball outside the off stump. Rahul stands his guard and dabs it down short third for four. Next one is slow again but this time, around the middle and leg stump and pitched further up on the pads. This is clipped down on the leg side, wide of the fielder at short fine for four. India, 296/4 after 41 overs.
