Gill: Definitely. If we would have got close to 180-190, it would have been a good match. In Qualifier I and in the final, Venkatesh Iyer had an effective approach to overcome the best new ball pair this IPL. He is not express quick; he doesn’t have a hat of tricks; he doesn’t always get the new ball; batsmen perceive him as the one to he hit, after the stifle and strangle of Bhuvneshwar Kumar-Josh Hazlewood-Jacob Duffy. But he has a large menu of useful balls, as he hurries batsmen off the surface. He moves the ball a shade either way. He is quicker than most batsmen think he is. Titans’ Nishant Sindhu underestimated his pace and paid the price by dragging a hard length ball straight to long-on. The ball arrived a wee bit quicker than he had judged. Marginally, and Rasikh deals with fine margins. He has quietly emerged as a bankable wicket-taker too, plucking 17, his side’s second highest wicket-taker of the tournament, the unsung stinging fourth beetle.

Jos Buttler holds the key for the Gujarat Titans. He has got himself in, but that's besides the point. However, if dew were to form, that would change a lot of things for the Titans. It would make the defence extremely tough. However, if anything over the years gone by, finals tend to be low-scoring affairs and more than skill, it becomes about efficiency. It is not the surface which has been kind to the spinners in the past, and once that moisture dries out in the wicket, the batting will become easier and easier. Good partnership this between Sindhu and Buttler, it is a sharp tactical call from the Titans, as expected from them. If they managed to take this to the 15th over, they have enough firepower later in the innings to capitalise on. Oops! We jinxed it. It is not going to be the case that Rasikh Dhar has picked up Sindhu. It was a short ball which the batter slapped straight to long-off, a bit of a nothing shot under the circumstances, as a nice partnership was brewing.

One thing which has been terrific about RCB throughout this season has been their planning. Once again, they have come today with plans A and B to start with. And that is what they did. However, GT themselves have bowlers in Rabada and Siraj who will exploit these conditions as much, if not better. He tried to swipe the ball across the line, riding the bounce. But this ball bounced a trifle more and Gill’s miscue looped in the air. The counterpunch was immediate. Hazlewood let out a roar.
