South Africa vs Netherlands Highlights, World Cup 2023: Netherlands claim famous 38-run victory

On Tuesday in Dharamsala, Netherlands pulled off one of the biggest upsets in ICC Men's Cricket World Cup history, as they brought down the high-flying South Africa.

Overseeing the result was coach Ryan Cook, who did not have the greatest of starts for his stint. He got the role after the then-coach Ryan Campbell suffered a series of cardiac arrests in April 2022. In Cook's first match as a coach in June 2022, England almost breached the 500-run mark (498 for 4) against the Dutch.

But after initial turbulence, things steadied. They gave Pakistan a run for their money, only losing two ODIs by 17 and nine runs. By then, Ryan was cooking something. He has started to apply Gary Kirsten's school of thought in his coaching and the results followed. First they defeated Zimbabwe and South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia. The Dutch followed it with an incredible run in the ODI World Cup qualifiers, the highlight being the tied match against against West Indies that they won it in the super over.

For Cook, it all started in 2013, when he travelled to India as an assistant coach of the South Africa U-19 team. He wrote to Kirsten, trying to understand the conditions in India. “He wrote me a big mail. Explained all the venues, and conditions beautifully. There was a very minute detail in it,” Cook had told The Indian Express ahead of their World Cup campaign.

Netherlands opener Max O’Dowd terms his captain Scott Edwards as an “awkward, but great man”. “Whether it be golf at 7:00 AM or the World Cup, he’s always ready.”

Being born in the South Pacific island of Tonga and raised in Melbourne before making his international debut with the Netherlands in 2017 after their first-choice wicketkeeper got injured, Edwards has always been ready for whatever assignment has come his way since his early cricketing days. Even the captaincy would come out of the blue last summer after Pieter Seelaar was forced to retire owing to a long-term back injury.

It was only fitting that O’Dowd’s words resonated once again as the Dutch skipper bailed his team from five down for 82 to 245 against a red-hot Proteas pace attack, before their bowlers sealed a memorable deal.

After his 68-ball 79 helped the Dutch team stun South Africa, Scott Edwards speaks.  

"Hopefully a few more (wins) to come. In both games we were in decent positions and then fell away. Nice to get in a few partnerships to get a total we thought was competitive. Am sure there's plenty of fans staying up and watching the game. Always a lot of supporters around, grateful for the support. Hopefully a few messages from them. We came into the tournament where we wanted to have a chance in the semi-finals and if you wanna do that you gotta beat teams and South Africa are one of the favourites the way they are playing, so it is a good win for us," he says.

Scott Edwards is awarded the Player of the Match for his 68-ball 79-run knock. 

After that demoralising defeat to the Dutch, South African skipper Temba Bavuma has his say. 

"From having the Dutch batters at 112 for 6, we shouldn't have allowed them to go past 200. We dropped the ball there but were still confident with the chase. But they were able to extract some deficiencies in our batting. We were clinical against Australia. We could have controlled the extras. The fielding wasn't up to the standards... not the same standard we had against Australia. We need to have some conversations in the team. You got to let the emotion to seep in: It will hurt. Our campaign is not over by any stretch of imagination. That was a proper display from them. They put us under pressure throughout. Good luck to them."

This is the first time that the Dutch team has beaten a Test-playing side in ODIs.  

Remember, they had beaten South Africa at the T20 World Cup last year as well!

The Dutch have a famous victory as the final wicket falls on the penultimate ball of the innings! 

South Africa lose by 38 runs! 

South Africa's 200 comes up! And Keshav Maharaj is edging close to his 50! He edges a ball behidn ot the boundary, and then swats the ball over the bowler's head for a six! A defeat still inevitable for them here. 

And the South Africans need 49 runs for victory! 

Ngidi and Maharaj have been very lucky that none of their shots have carried ot a fielder. But South Africa's luck is about to run out. 

A fielding infirngement at the end of the over from Van Beek sees the Dutchman needing to bowl another delivery. The ball also trickled to the boundary, so six runs coming off that over. 

On the free hit, Maharaj tries a ramp shot that you probably would remember from the movie Lagaan. 

South Africa need 62 runs from three overs. So a rate of just over 20 runs over over. (Still doable on paper, in reality you'd need Lady Luck herself to pick up the bat and take guard.)  

Lungi Ngidi and Keshav Maharaj are gamely clinging on to their wickets. Way too many shots have flown into the air and the fielder has not managed to get to the ball to catch it. 

Lungi Ngidi takes a bouncer from Paul van Meekeren straight on his neck! Somehow, he shrugs it off and is ready to bat again. A couple of shots in that over were airborne, but landed safely. 

After 39 overs, South Africa are 182/9. Just two runs coming off the over.

Two boundaries coming in the past two overs for South Africa. But the required run rate has crept up to 13.20 as the 38th over ends. 

Lungi Ngidi on one run, Keshav Maharaj is taking the initiative to take the battle to the Dutch. He has 20 runs off 21 balls with three boundaries.

SA are 180/9. They need 66 runs from 30 balls. 

South Africa need to score two runs per ball for the next six overs. And they have just one wicket in hand! 

Ngidi and Maharaj are in the middle. 

We're one mis-timed or missed shot away from a famous upset. We have seen way too many of those today from the South African batters, four of them so far have missed the line of the ball completely and have seen their stumps getting clattered. 

Two balls after that towering sixer, Rabada tries to go for another hit to the fence. Instead he ends up hitting the ball from Bas de Leede to Engelbrecht at point. The fielder plucks the ball out of the air for a slick-looking catch. 

Rabada's stint i nthe middle ends for nine! 

SA are 166/9

11 runs coming off the 35th over. That included a tall sixer from Rabada that soared into the evening Dharamsala night and landed past the boundary ropes. 

After 35 overs, SA are 166/8! 

Thrice now in the space of 15 balls, a top edge from a South African bat has fallen safe. You could almost audaciously claim that the Proteas have Lady Luck on their side. But they're staring at defeat at the moment against rank outsiders. So that luck theory doesn't really cut it. 

Gerald Coetzee is gone! He tries to hoist the ball into the stands with an audacious pull from outside off. The ball catches the top edge and goes straight up. Keeper and captain Edwards is under it, and despite considerable pressure manages to cling on! 

Coetzee's quick stint ends for 22 off 23 balls. 

Rabada in the middle! 

SA are 147/8!

South Africa 99 runs from 10 overs. It's do-able, but it's daunting. 

They're running out of wickets! 

After 33 overs, SA are 147/7! 

It's the big one! Van Beek has another breakthrough! 

David Miller is bowled as he tried to hit the ball for a maximum. The ball evaded the bat and kissed the forehead of the off stump. He goes for 43 off 52 balls. Keshav Maharaj is out in the middle. 

After 31 overs, SA are 145/7! 

Gerald Coetzee is already on 18 off 12 balls. The innings so far has included a couple of lucky boundaries. But with Miller dropping anchor, the Proteas needed a batter to release the pressure. The last over brought 10 runs. That included a gorgeous cover drive from Miller. They will need more of this attacking intent.

What do you think Temba Bavuma is thinking at the moment? The Proteas need 117 runs from 15 overs.

The Dutch really need to consider having a first slip. In that last over from De Leede, Coetzee managed to hit a boundary, but was really flummoxed by the swing on another ball. On any other day, he should have been out on that ball.

Gerald Coetzee finally starting to take the attack to the rivals. 

He attacked Paul van Meekeren in that over, with a cover drive to the boundary and a lucky six behind the stumps. That was a really comical six, he looked like he was trying to get his bat out of the way at one point before the ball clipped the toe end and flew over the ropes!

Paul van Meekeren knocks down the stumps of Marco Jansen! And South Africa are staring down the barrel! 

The Dutch side is smelling blood in the water! Proteas need 137 runs from 108 balls.

Marco Jansen gets a double and that means the Proteas reach three-figures!A slightly unconvincing shot from Jansen who prods at the ball.

The last two overs have fetched just six runs and some seriously good cricket by the Dutch team. Much improved side over the last couple of years. Are we heading to another upset between SA vs NED match in the WC?

Roelof van der Merwe, who has bowled four overs and picked two wickets, is back into the attack, giving away just four from the over. Right on target and no room whatsoever. David Miller and Maro Jansen are in the middle for SA

WOW! Klassen was looking good and falls against the run of play as he pulls one but finds the fielder! The catch is taken out at fine leg and the match is wide open once again. Klaasen is out for 28

Miller gives himself room and hits a massive six. He needs to rise to the occasion today and contribute to his legacy in South African cricket.

Klaasen gets the measure of van Meekeren and gets another four. It was a bouncer outside off that Klaasen easily lifts over long-on. That's just too easy to hit.

After a sustained spell of pressure, Klaasen latches on to the shorter ball and pulls it well into the gap out at mid-wicket. A pressure-relieving boundary comes.

Paul van Meekeren, who has already claimed the wicket of Miller, bowled a snorter. Miller tried to duck! And the ball collided with the helmet. The batter is fine, but it's a sign of how under-confident the Proteas batters are at the moment! They have 200 more runs to chase down!

WOW! The Dutch have struck again and this time it is Proteas captain Temba Bavuma who departs. And guess who is the wicket-taker?  former South African international Roelof van der Merwe. It is the one that skids with the arm and passes through the gap between bat and pad. Massive moment in the game.

Bavuma cuts loose and hits a SIX with authority! And then ends the over with a six. We wonder why have Dutch implemented spinners from both ends when everyone knows ball swings under lights? And they also have the pacers who can swing the ball too.
