Powered by Apple Intelligence, Siri can better understand context, take actions across apps, and respond based on what’s on your screen. This makes it a smarter assistant that feels more aware and useful in everyday tasks.

It's much more precise in capturing what you say, from spelling to punctuation and capitalization. And because it's built right into the keyboard, you can use it across the system, whether you're texting, in group chat, while you're on the subway, or thinking out loud while using your journal app.

What kids can see

Starting this year, parents can ensure their kids start focused by giving them access to only the content they are comfortable with.

It begins with an easy-to-use set of assistance where parents can choose exactly what they want to learn:

- a few essential apps

- a recommended set

- or the specific ones they want

Over time, a child will be ready to add more, and parents can remain in control.

Apple introduces Child Accounts

It enables safeguards across the system tailored to their age, like blocking adult websites, only allowing age-appropriate content, and setting age-based restrictions in the app store. A child account also provides access to powerful parental controls. If your kids aren't on a child account today, you can convert their existing account.

“For those under the age of 13, access to personal devices should be limited and expanded when a child is ready. As parents, we want our kids to develop healthy digital habits. To help parents accomplish this, the American Academy of Pediatrics created the Family Media Plan.”

Big push for Search, Health and audio experiences

Across iOS, iPadOS and macOS, Apple has revamped the underlying technology that powers Search. The company says the re-architected indexing system makes search faster, more reliable and more consistent across devices. New content is indexed almost immediately, while the latest and most relevant context is prioritised in search results.

Apple is also expanding iCloud’s sharing capabilities, making it easier to share photos and videos with Android users. The company announced improvements to the Health app aimed at delivering more accurate insights, new audio equaliser options for AirPods, and enhanced visual experiences on Vision devices with more realistic imagery.

Apple says these updates are designed to improve usability and create a more seamless experience across its ecosystem.

New Search Index

On iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, Apple says it has rebuilt the foundation of search that powers Spotlight, Photos, and Mail. At its core is the search index. It is a rich catalog your device builds of all your content so it can understand what you have and where it's landing.

After you update, the new search index goes to work indexing the content of your device, so it has a complete picture of what's already there. And, as new content comes in, it's indexed almost immediately. So when you go to search, you'll find what you're looking for.

Plus, in Mail, a completely new ranking system surfaces even more relevant results in your top hits.

Apple introduces macOS Golden Gate

The next version of Apple’s desktop operating system is macOS Golden Gate. Apple says its products play an integral role in the daily lives of millions of users, and this year the focus is less on introducing a long list of new features and more on refining existing experiences. The company has worked to make apps faster, smoother, and more efficient, with many of the design changes shaped by feedback from users and developers.

To improve readability, the Liquid Glass interface now includes a new slider that lets users adjust visibility. macOS also introduces a more consistent design language, featuring a unified toolbar and sidebars that extend to the edge of the screen, allowing content to flow seamlessly beneath them. While last year’s updates emphasized visual harmony, this year Apple has refined the refraction effects in icons, giving them a more layered, sharper, and better-defined appearance.

Additional Liquid Glass refinements

Every window on macOS now has the same title bar, ensuring greater consistency across all of your apps, even if they happen to not be here. On app icons, Apple is taking this new design even further by integrating additional layers of liquid glass directly into the icon artwork itself.

'WWDC is about introducing new tech': Cook

"At Apple, we've always believed that technology should be personal, powerful, and easy to use. The tight integration of our hardware and our software unlocks the full potential of each of our products. That same philosophy drives us to design our operating systems to work together seamlessly and to create a common foundation of technologies to help developers build great experiences across their app.

This is what WWDC is all about: introducing new technologies and innovations that push the limits of what's possible.

Today, we're looking forward to sharing some exciting announcements, including our latest advancements in Apple Intelligence and Siri. With that, I'd like to hand over," Cook says.

The multi-year, billion-dollar deal between Apple and Google

At the start of the year, Apple and Google announced a multi-year deal under which Gemini models will power Siri and other Apple Intelligence features. The arrangement had reportedly been in the offing for many months. It came after years of antitrust scrutiny over an earlier arrangement that witnessed Google paying billions of dollars to Apple to be its default search engine service on iPhones and other devices.

As part of the billion-dollar agreement, Apple is reportedly relying on a custom Gemini model from Google to power the new AI assistant. It is also hosting much of the new Siri on Google servers, as per Bloomberg. But several questions remain: Will this new Siri still have a piece of Apple innovation? What about Apple's long-touted ability on privacy and safeguarding user data? How will all this affect the consumer experience for iPhone owners?

Will we get any clues about Apple's foldable iPhone?

Apple is set to unveil iOS 27, the next version of its iPhone operation system, during the WWDC 2026 keynote today. There are several rumours floating around ahead of WWDC 2026. But one of the safest bets is that Apple’s new iPhone software will be called iOS 27, following the name change introduced last year.

iOS 27 has also been designed keeping in mind Apple’s first foldable iPhone, which is set to launch in September 2026, according to Bloomberg. Since the widely rumoured foldable iPhone will boast a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display, Apple has focused on making changes to iOS 27 that accommodates this new form factor, the report said.

Privacy and safety upgrades?

Social media is abuzz about the new, AI-revamped Siri set to be unveiled at WWDC 2026 today, alongside major AI features and quality and performance improvements across the operating systems.

However, Apple’s announcements today could also focus on two key areas, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman: Privacy and safety.

Why AI could be the biggest story at WWDC 2026

Apple’s AI strategy is expected to dominate WWDC 2026 as the company tries to recover from delays and criticism surrounding Apple Intelligence. The focus is likely to be a rebuilt Siri, deeper AI integration across apps, privacy-focused features, and new developer tools.

The tech giant appears to be positioning itself as a platform and services provider rather than competing directly in the AI model race. Click here to read more

App Store payouts grew 4x in 2025: Apple

Days ahead of its annual developers conference, Apple said that it paid a record $1.4 trillion to App Store developers in billings and sales last year. The study was carried out by economists at Analysis Group. It found that Apple did not take a commission in more than 90 per cent of transactions to App Store developers in 2025.

Among the study’s other key findings are:

-In 2025, more than 40 of the top 100 apps on the storefront featured consumer-facing AI capabilities, and those apps saw stronger billing growth than other top 100 apps.

-The total $1.1 trillion developer payout in 2025 was driven by the continued growth of grocery, food delivery and pickup, general retail, and travel.

-Developer billings and sales for digital goods and services totalled $149 billion, driven by games, enterprise apps, and video streaming apps.

-In-app advertising revenue from ads placed by developers in their apps was $151 billion.

-The App Store saw over 850 million average weekly users spanning 175 countries and regions.

End of the Tim Cook era

For those who have followed WWDC over the years, this year’s keynote could mark the end of an era. The keynote today is likely to serve as a final showcase of CEO Tim Cook’s vision for Apple and a reflection on how he steered the company after Steve Jobs passed away in 2011.

Under Cook’s leadership, Apple became one of the world’s most valuable technology companies, while the iPhone emerged as a symbol of American innovation.

He also oversaw the growth of the App Store into a highly profitable ecosystem, powered by developers whose apps transformed the mobile industry and reshaped how people interact with digital services.

Now, the big question is whether Ternus will reset Apple’s strategy going forward and rethink the role of the App Store at a time when AI agents are rapidly becoming the primary way people interact with digital products and services.

What’s at stake for Apple?

At this year’s WWDC, Apple needs to demonstrate how it can make consumer AI useful despite trailing competitors in the AI race.

Over the past two years, under the Apple Intelligence banner, the company introduced several AI-powered features, including Writing Tools, Genmoji, Summarisation, and Clean Up in the Photos app. However, none of these features appear to have gained the widespread adoption Apple had hoped for.

Is this the year Apple Intelligence evolves from being a feature into a platform? What do industry insiders have to say? Read more here.

What to expect, what not to

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 kicks off today (June 8), where the tech giant is expected to show off a newly overhauled Siri on the iPhone capable of taking multi-step actions, alongside new operating systems for its devices with more advanced AI features.

We expect to see AI upgrades across Photos, Search, Camera, and system-wide interactions.

Of course, the annual developer conference is going to be beyond AI as well, with a focus on tools that developers use but don’t be surprised if it turns upcoming iOS and macOS, the two most dominant operating systems that powers the iPhone and Mac, into AI OS.

WWDC isn't a hardware event. Instead, it's where Apple showcases the latest versions of its operating systems and other software, while giving developers an early chance to explore and build for them. That said, much of the software unveiled at WWDC is designed to power the new hardware Apple typically launches later in the year. In that sense, the event serves as a preview of the experiences and features that will define Apple's fall product lineup.
