MS Word constructs a table of contents with incorrect page number

David Diamond 10 Reputation points

I have a really simple document, no headers, no footers, no special numbering for "front matter". My document title page is page 1. The TOC starts on page 2 and continues to page 3. The very first section of my document starts on page 4, and yet the TOC thinks it starts on page 3. I have updated and rebuilt the TOC several times, yet this behaviour persists. What is wrong????

There may be an empty paragraph after your TOC which is in a style that is picked up in your TOC.

I neglected to mention that my document was originally authored in the browser version of Word. I have learned that this is simply not reliable for Table of Contents creation. I reluctantly installed the desktop version of Word, and sure enough there were some extraneous page breaks which I cleaned up, but the most important thing was rebuilding the TOC in the desktop version of Word. Then everything worked just as expected and the world became a happy place again.

Just to be clear, I didn't have to do anything fancy with section breaks, or anything else. I still have a page break after my cover page, then there is the 2-page TOC followed by a page break, then section 1.0 on page 4.

Moral of the story: only use the desktop version of Word if you want a proper table of contents.

My thanks to all who weighed in on this issue.

The web or browser app Word was designed as an adjunct or helper app. It does not have anything like the power or versatility of the desktop application.

Without more information, no one here can give you an exact answer.

If you use the Insert Cover Page function, that initial page is numbered 0 and not counted in the number of pages in the document (recent versions of Word). https://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/sections2007.htm#Cover_Pages

My guess is a Section break with page number formatting set to start on page 3.

The Table of Contents will always show the formatted page number which can be different from what you see.

I advise turning on Section and Formatted Page Number in your Word status bar. Right-click on the Status Bar and check them.

P.S. You cannot do anything about this except in one of the desktop applications.

You can provide more information with screenshots of the status bar and the Format Page Numbers dialog.

    Hi @David Diamond,

Based on your sharing, I suspect that the first section and TOC section are not correctly separated and it still links to the TOC section which explain the Word thinks it start on page 3 after two TOC pages. In that case, I suggest you should first check these:

    • In Word, press Ctrl + Shift + 8 to turn on formatting marks
    • Go to the first section heading and check if you are using a Page Break or a Section Break before it. If you see a Page Break, that's the problem. You need to delete it and add a Section Break to separate the TOC and your first section as different sections.
    • After confirming they are different sections, go to the Footer in page 4 to edit the page number and ensure "Linked to Previous" is unchecked (don't see the "Same as Previous" in Footer)

Hope my sharing maybe helpful for your concern. You can try these and let me know if it works for you. If not, please don't hesitate to reach out again and we can work together to figure out the solution.
