Both Windows 10 and Mac have a hosts file you can use to disable websites. With this trick you can redirect all traffic from that domain to your local machine, causing them to simply stop loading. Here’s how to do it in Windows 10:

  1. Open File Explorer by clicking the folder icon in your taskbar. Click the bar to the left of Search and paste in: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
  2. Double click the hosts file and open it using Notepad or some other text editor. Create a new line at the bottom of the file by tapping Enter.
  3. On the new line, paste in the IP 127.0.0.1 and then type the URL of the domain you want to block. For instance if you want to hide Facebook, the line will look like this: 127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
  4. To block more sites, create a new line for each, and follow the step above again. Make sure to save your changes and close the file.πŸ‘ Image

You need to remove the # from the start of the line.

Also the block should look like:

    127.0.0.1 www.google.com

    127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com

    i.e. block the entire domain

    not www.facebook.com/someotherpage

You may also have to clean the cache of the browser before testing.

Hi, right click on Notepad and run as administrator, then press Ctrl + O, and browse to

    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

***Make sure you set the file type to All files

my internet provider is comcast thou will this still work?

Absolutely! I did this with Comcast for many years when my son was young.

You are simply replacing Comcast's DNS with OpenDNS. It's no problem for Comcast.

    I suggest OpenDNS from Cisco.
