Hello.

Im gonna migrate a computer from Windows 10 Professional to Windows 10 IoT LTSC 2021. I bought a Windows 11 IoT LTSC 2024 license by mistake. When Windows 10 IoT asks me for the license, will the one for Windows 11 IoT work?

Hi IT,

Your Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 license legally entitles you to run Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 under Microsoft's Downgrade Rights policy. Because product keys are cryptographically tied to specific operating system versions, your Windows 11 key will not activate a Windows 10 installation directly.

If you attempt to input the Windows 11 key into the Windows 10 activation prompt, the system will reject it and typically return error code 0xC004F050, which simply means the product key is invalid for the installed software. The operating system determines this by querying the registry path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform. You can think of this registry location as a background ledger that securely checks your installed Windows version against the cryptographic signature of the key you provide to ensure they are an exact match.

To successfully activate your system, you must obtain the correct legacy installation media and the corresponding Windows 10 IoT LTSC 2021 product key through official Microsoft channels. For Volume Licensing agreements, log into the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under the billing and products section to generate the appropriate Key Management Service or Multiple Activation Key. For OEM embedded licenses, contact your hardware vendor or authorized Microsoft IoT distributor to request official Downgrade Enablement materials containing the exact key needed for your deployment.

The Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 license cannot be used as the license for a Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 installation.

Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC is provided and licensed per specific version and edition. The documentation treats Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 and Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 as separate product offerings and versions, each with its own media and keys obtained via Volume Licensing or OEM channels.

For Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC volume activation, the prerequisites explicitly list:

    • Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 installation media or ISO
    • A corresponding Multiple Activation Key (MAK) or use of KMS for that product

Similarly, for Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, its own keys are used. The KMS client keys table shows distinct entries for “Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024” and “Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021,” which indicates that each version has its own activation identity and key.

Therefore, to properly license and activate Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, a key for Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 is required. The Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 license/key is intended for the Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 product and should be used with that version.
