Connecting Learn Content to an LMS

Patrick Del Rosario 0 Reputation points

Hello,

I am currently trying to see if there is some kind of integration between Microsoft and Workday that will track completion of courses I take through Microsoft Learn. I think I read something about using Viva learn but having a hard time locating the documentation around it. Thanks!

Sincerely,

Patrick

  1. AI answer

Workday can be integrated with Microsoft Viva Learning, and Viva Learning already includes Microsoft Learn content and supports completion tracking. However, completions for Microsoft Learn courses are tracked through Viva Learning and its Organizational Reporting, not directly from Workday.

Key points from the available documentation:

    1. Viva Learning includes Microsoft Learn content by default
With Microsoft 365 and Office 365 enterprise plans, Viva Learning provides access to the full Microsoft Learn catalog, along with other providers such as Microsoft 365 and LinkedIn Learning. Users access Microsoft Learn content via the Viva Learning app in Teams.
    2. Workday can be configured as a content source in Viva Learning
Workday is a supported LMS/content source in Viva Learning. The integration is based on Workday RaaS APIs and supports:
      • Catalog ingestion (digital courses, blended courses, programs, lessons, and 3P content configured in Workday)
      • Assignments on all catalog types
      • Assignment completions
      • Self-enrollment completions (except lessons)
      • Single sign-on
Viva Learning ingests catalog, assignment, and completion data from Workday, but Workday remains the system of record for its own content and learner records.
    3. How Microsoft Learn content and reporting fit in
      For Microsoft Learn specifically:
      • Users can access Microsoft Learn training content through Viva Learning in Teams.
      • Organizations can perform broad completion reporting on Microsoft Learn content using the Microsoft Learn Organizational Reporting service.
      • This scenario is designed so that Viva Learning acts as the hub for access, while Learn Organizational Reporting provides completion data for Microsoft Learn content.
    4. Typical setup pattern with Workday and other providers
When Workday is integrated with other third-party content providers, common practice is:
      • Use the LMS (Workday) for compliance trainings that must be audited and tracked.
      • Use digital content providers (like Microsoft Learn via Viva Learning) for growth/skill/optional trainings, which may not require the same level of tracking.
    5. End-user experience
When an LMS (such as Workday) is added as a content source in Viva Learning:
      • Content from the LMS appears in Viva Learning.
      • When a user plays a course from Viva Learning, they are deep-linked to the LMS page and authenticate there.
      • For Microsoft Learn content, users access it via Viva Learning, and completions can be reported via Learn Organizational Reporting.

In practice, to connect these pieces in an organization:

    • Configure Workday as a content source in Viva Learning so Workday catalog, assignments, and completions flow into Viva Learning.
    • Rely on Viva Learning’s built-in Microsoft Learn integration plus Microsoft Learn Organizational Reporting to track Microsoft Learn completions.
    • Use Viva Learning as the central hub in Teams where users see both Workday and Microsoft Learn content, while reporting is split between Workday (for its content) and Learn Organizational Reporting (for Microsoft Learn content).
