Internet Explorer - Trident Engine

NicxNoob 21 Reputation points

Hi All,

Good day.

We are planning to disable Internet Explorer Feature from our environment. Will disabling IE Feature also disables the MSHTML (Trident) Engine? If not, how can we also disable/remove trident engine?

Thank in advance.

    Operating System: Windows 10.
I disabled IE in Windows Feature and hyperlinks would not work in MS Office now. I believe the browser engine in Windows depends on MSHTML (trident) to open the hyperlinks in Windows 10. MS Engineer must be working on this transitioning from IE to EDGE browser engine.

    Hi @NicxNoob

Are you using one of these methods to disable Internet Explorer on Windows? If so, I think it can only disable IE app.

I made a test that disable Internet Explorer in Windows Features, then use WebBrowser Control which is based on MSHTML engine. WebBrowser Control can still work after disabling Internet Explorer. So I think it can only disable IE app.

Besides, as far as I know we can't disable/remove MSHTML in Windows as it's a part of the operating system.

      YuZhou-MSFT,

Yes, I used one of those methods to disable IE11.

Can we safe to say that, we can avoid any exploitation/vulnerabilities that uses MSHTL engine through IE by just disabling IE feature, given that MS will still continue to patch MSHTML until 2029?

      Thank you very much.

      Hi @NicxNoob

By disabling IE feature, IE desktop application can't work any more, so I think there's no way to use something "through IE".
The MSHTML (Trident) engine is the engine used by IE mode and IE mode will be supported through at least 2029.
