- It covers a wide range of research disciplines, including geomagnetism, aeronomy, space science, seismology, volcanology, geodesy, and planetary science.
- It publishes Full Papers, Express Letters, Frontier Letters, Technical Reports, and Comments.
- It is the official publication of the Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences; the Seismological Society of Japan; the Volcanological Society of Japan; the Geodetic Society of Japan; and the Japanese Society for Planetary Sciences.
- It continues the traditions of its predecessors, Journal of Geomagnetism and Geoelectricity and Journal of Physics of the Earth, has been publishing excellent research in the Earth and planetary sciences for more than 70 years.
